I see way too many requests for foxes to be implemented but no one seems to explain why they should be added outside of "they're cute". Foxes are very cute! And in this submission I aim to convince you why I think they would make a great addition to the game.
Red foxes will exclusively spawn in forests, roofed forests and in extreme hills at night time, just like their real life nocturnal counterpart that tend to stay within heavily wooded and mountainy areas and only come out at night. Arctic foxes and fennec foxes will spawn in cold taiga and mesa biomes respectively and will exhibit the exact same traits as the red foxes. Foxes will be just slightly more common than wolves, but rarer than pigs, cows etc.
Foxes will wander around their habitat. You will either find a singular fox who is out to hunt rabbits and chickens, or even rarer, a fox family (1-2 adults with accompanying babies) with one hunter who kills for their family. Foxes will run away from the player if approached, but will get aggressive if continuously followed or attacked. What makes the fox unique is that when you build a sizeable settlement (house, base) near any of the above biomes is you'll start to see him get curious and check out your home during the day time, which will be the only time you'll ever see them at day. If the fox doesnt see you around he'll jump over any crops you have and kill any livestock that is within radius of your house. This makes the player have to always check up on their home if they are strip mining or adventuring. Foxes are crafty and can even dig under fences, the only way to get rid of them is to have a wolf guard your house and scare him off.
Foxes aren't all bad though! You cannot tame foxes, but you can build a bond with them. You can befriend a fox in a similar way with an ocelot - by holding a piece of raw meat in your hand and being patient. If the fox trusts you, he will spare your land and livestock, if you continue to feed your local fox he will begin to return the favour by bringing you raw rabbit, chicken or fish on a random night time basis, a MUCH welcome food source for those nights when you can't find any animals. Note that you will only receive food from Mr. Fox if you don't go to bed, increasing your chances of encountering a Phantom, even then, the fox isn't guaranteed to visit every night so it's your gamble to make.
- Breeding + Drops
Foxes can be bred in the same way tamed wolves can, but only when they've built your trust. When killed, foxes have an extremely rare chance of dropping a "Fox tail" which can be brewed to make a "Potion of Slyness" which decreases your detection to enemies, allowing you to pass hostile mobs at night without them noticing you for however long the potion effects last for. If you kill a trusted fox, their pack may seek revenge.
I hope at least some of you are interested in some of my ideas! At the end of the day, I just love foxes and would like more overall mob variety in forests rather than coming across the same old pig and cow all the time, plus the arctic fox and fennec fox would make good exclusive mobs for those respective biomes which I think are lacking.
