it would be an illusioner drop

I, too, like the illusion drop idea. However, I think the ambient potion effect is far too overpowered. Is this to say I am a mere ghast tear away from INFINITE REGENERATION?! Come on now. Let's not forget that Mojang added the beacon in order to give us ambient potion effects, and even that is way more limited than this idea.

I'd much rather the cloak do something that isn't in the game yet - say, provide resistance to magic and negative potion effects when worn.

Speaking of wearing, that's my other main concern. How and where is this item to be used/worn? Surely it wouldn't take the chestplate slot - unless that was intended to balance out the OPness of the ambient potion effect?

When being worn, I think it would lose durabillaty, like the Elytra.

Looses durability, you need to defeat the Illusion Illager to get it, it takes up the chestplate-slot in your inventory and then you get potion effects from it... it’s not too OP! It’s good. I like that.

I dont Think the potion effect on the cloak would be infinite, just very extended at the cost of a chest plate. For example a 2:00 swiftness potion would become a 20:00 swiftness potion but you lose all that sweet sweet chest plate defence.

to counter being OP the illusioner should be a boss

This should also be customizable with banners.

I like this idea but i dont think the potion of invisibility should be able to work with it. Also itd be better if the cloak was super end game or at least a very rare drop/find. But overall, a very good idea. Maybe without potion effects it could be used as an aesthetic item. Instead of putting a potion into a cauldron you maybe put water and some dye in it to make it a certain colour.

A cloak or a cape would be a great item to expand the magic of Minecraft but I have few suggestions to change your idea.

Instead of classic potions make a new type of potions or a new enchant-like station for the cloak.

The cloak/cape could give effects such as double jump, speed, Longer Reach (new one for builders where you can reach further), slow fall or some kind of mob protection (eg. extremely rare effect where phantoms would spawn much much less often.. as they are annoying and don't  do anything good). (a bit different than the beacon)

Of course, make an option to combine it with a banner.

In case any of these items seems OP make the new "Enchantments" or special Potions untradable (no villager triad) (or only with wondering trader) but achievable by means of mob drop and chest loot.

Since the aquatic Update, there are many many treasure chests around and so these items should not be a problem to find whilst also being very valuable.

More so for Servers. The Treasure Chest system promotes adventuring into the world and leaves little to no space for AFK or other farms.

Maybe instead of infinite potion effects, the effects would only activate under certain circumstances. For example, if a player wearing a fire resistance cloak falls into lava, the fire resistance effect would activate for fifteen seconds or so. This activation would eat through the durability of the cloak, but still be capable of saving lives. An invisibility cloak could only activate if the player stands still for a long period of time, then gives the player 30 seconds of invisibility. A speed cloak should only activate for a short burst when a player holds down the sprint key, etc.

Other effects, such as regeneration, water breathing, night vision, levitation, slow falling, etc, shouldn't be obtainable on cloaks at all, so that they don't make potions and beacons useless.

As for equipping, I would give cloaks the unique ability of being able to be worn over chest plates, this being balanced out with their somewhat limited effectiveness, difficulty of obtaining (Illusioner drops, as mentioned by brenn boyer), and relatively low durability (maybe around 64 durability?).

It should take up the chest plate armor piece and it shouldn't give any armor points.

I think that the cloak should be an Illusioner drop and it should work like a tool so that every time you put it on it can give Invisibility for the basic (maybe find more items in dungeons or pyramids). This would make sure its not to overpowered, I do think that cauldrons should be able to have other types of liquid besides water in it like milk or something and should be able to help repair it, or something to that effect. Maybe a potion of revealing or a potion of sight or night vision could help you see someone in Invisibility cloak.

I think this and the elytra should get an extra slot or a singular slot that takes up everything because it looks bad to be just missing a chest plate.

Increases the potion timer, Not to infinity, Maybe based on how many potions you soak into the cape with a cap? Drops off of Illusionist (or drops crafting materials from illusionist?) Ability to put banners on them for customization and magic resistance.

I think this could be balanced with 3 features:

    1. It's an uncraftable treasure item
    2. Like elytra, it is worn in the chestplate slot but has no armor points
    3. Only certain effects can be applied (e.g. speed and jump boost, but not regeneration), or the effects have a strength below level 1.

On the design end, I would love if the cloak took on the color of the applied effect.

Personally, I think the Idea is genius, I always thought that Minecraft needed cloaks as just cosmetics (I love the cape/hood combo of cloaks) ... but the idea of soaking the cloak to give it special effects is incredibly unique! Sir, You have my vote! -Beast Wars Silverbolt

Perfect, it should drop from illusion era and take the chest plate spot with leather protection

Cool Idea, This should be a drop from the Illusioner but it has like a 10 min increase for the time of the potion.

Wow I legit thought of the exact same idea! Great minds think alike... A possible enchant /curse you could get on it would be a curse where every effect you get while wearing the cape is pemanently applied. E.g. if you are hit with poison, the effect is always on the cape

And to get rid of a enchantment/curse on the cloak, you put it in a cauldron and wash it with milk.

You could make wool/phantom membrane/leaf cloaks available early game, but they wouldn't have magic-like effects, whereas the illusioner drop could be a special magic cloak.

Wool cloaks slow down insomnia and make spiders neutral. they could also shorten a mob's follow range.

Phantom membrane cloaks would make phantoms, spiders, skeletons, and strays neutral, as they are would be fairly difficult to obtain.

Leaf cloaks would make you nigh invisible to mobs when sneaking, even if you're wearing other armor.

Perhaps they could be placed in the helmet slot (hood on) or the chest plate slot (hood off) so they could be worn with elytra? This would also add to the aesthetics.

Perhaps there could also be a prank version, like the Cloak of Hostility (which makes EVERY non-villager mob hostile on sight and increases everything follow range by 200 blocks)

It sounds like an RPG item...

So haruneko and brenn gave amazing Ideas. The magic cloak from Illusioners and other cloaks seem pretty cool... And here's what I'd like to add.

Considering we only have 4 types of armor pieces, perhaps the cloaks could be given their own slot, as a nerf to the magic cloak, which I believe should have An Infinite potion duration, they can only be tainted with a single potion effect, and should only be compatible with Invisibility (which now hides armor If on a cloak), regeneration, fire resistance, resistance (via potion of the turtle master, although without slowness and being weaker, such as only giving resistance 2 If you make the potion stronger.), and slow fall.

Besides this, other cloaks can be added, like a blazing leather cloak that enables dashing In four directions, which could affect parkour maps, and By doing all this, players now have more to do more then just search for netherite, and would give players more bragging rights.

When you soak it in water the effects should be erased.

Also the potion should slowly lose effect like a potion of leaping II would become a potion of leaping I in ten minutes, and that would vanish after another ten minutes.
