So there are 4 very specific reasons i love this feature in java. 1) offhand torch, mainhand tools: mining and placing torches as needed. 2) offhand concrete powder, mainhand pickaxe: makes stacks of concrete quick and easy 3) off hand unimportant block mainhand pickaxe when mining out a tunnel deep or in the nether in order to quickly place in a lava hole if you find one. 4) rockets, for flying with elytra.

I play on windows 10 and sometimes xbox, i understand the complication of mak8ng this work for touch devices but i think a good aolution has been presented here. That being said, from an immersion standpoint, there is no valid reason for us being unable to put anything in our other hand.

You can use right click to hit with your right hand and left click to hit with the left hand. This mode is only for duel wielding swords and axes

I don't like this idea, what if I have a torch on one hand and my sword on the other and a zombie walking towards me, if I touch on the middle of my screen I could accidentally use the torch to hit the mob instead of my sword.

How about not even splitting the screen? The problem is Bedrock edition on mobile (aka PE), since other editions have "right" and "left" click.
Why not just use "magic" to detect right/left click action on mobile as we are doing currently? Other stuff would be same as Java ...

    Wait ... "magic"?

So, PE client currently -> Let's imagine you have a block in your hand. How does it know if you want to hit the wall or place the block from hand? Well, let's call that "magic".

So dual wielding wouldn't be a huge problem - let's take:

Shield & sword. If you tap and hold on your screen, the offhand slot - shield, is activated. If you tap - you swing your sword. If shield is in main hand, it would stay the same - tap&hold for shield, tap for attack with sword from offhand.

Block & pickaxe - block placing could use the tap and pickaxe tap&hold (as it is currently).  -> Changing the hands -> block in main hand & pickaxe in left hand - it would stay the same, so tap&hold would destroy block with pickaxe, tap would place block (tapping on entity would cause to hit it with your pickaxe since it deals more damage).

Block & sword - here, the "magic" is used. If you click on a block without function, you probably don't want to hit it - so the block from offhand would be placed. If you hit an entity, hey, you probably want to deal damage, meaning the sword will be used.

Those mechanics wouldn't change current state that much, but would add a lot more.
