I propose two ideas:
1) Switch the textures. Have the growing chrous plant look closed, and once the stalk is complete use the open flower texture.
2) Color the chorus flowers! Have them in a few different colors: White, Light Purple, and Dark Purple would be the most common color. Then have a few rare colors that players would have to hunt for: Blue, Light Blue, Orange .... and then Red could be even rarer! Players would really have to keep their eye out for it. And just to make it even more frustrating, a Black petal flower that is *extremely* rare.
This would add a small splash of color to the End right at the top of the Chorus Plants. It would also entice exploration of the End! The only way to get a Black Chorus Plant would be to hunt for it! (Can you imagine finding it after looking for hours, only to chop the stem down before harvesting the flower? The agony!)
I would suggest Purpur, made from the stems, remain the same. The different colors would only be on the fully grown flower texture and would not influence the Purpur block. This suggestion is for fun aesthetics.
