The wave could be an entity, rather than a block, similar to how a shulker behaves like a block with a dynamic hitbox. I think this would be a great addition. Realistically, the kind of waves which crash on shores aren't noticeable in deep water, so they should spawn near coasts rather than out at sea.

Sounds really hard to implement with not a lot of benefit tbh. Not a great idea.

I would love to see that and just a thought randomly stuff can brought in by the waves ( Nautilus shell, Trident, sea grass, etc.) That would be a good addition to Minecraft.

I love dangerous situations in game, maybe during a storm at sea the water tries to pull you under, just to add more caution about these things that get boring sometimes

I like this idea. I have recently built some large ships and would like to have waves around them rather than a calm surface.

i think that this idea is really cool, and that it could be added since we've just had the aquatic update, except that the update is already out, and it would kinda be too late

and also, it would probably need a TON of coding from the MC team

    but anyway, nice idea!

And when there are thunderstorms, the waves get crazier and life threatening? Just throwing out some ideas.. Maybe a surfboard that can be used as transportation and better than the boat? Ooh, maybe you can make a net to grab items washed up from the waves..

Waves do sound like a great feature to add, but can you give us a reason why to add it?

This would be great for immersion!

Maybe for an animation there might be one snow higher of water where the wave is.

Honkitha, some people don't know how to get mods, like me. Also, they might not have enough money to buy them.

Waves would add some lively appearance! I agree with another person's response that the waves should break near the shores, not in the deep.

If anything was going to happen in the deep, it would be swells, which I think could look cool, but I really question if it would be worth the potential trouble (like driving boats through a bunch of fluctuating water blocks...).

Curling waves would be cool for sure, but I would even just be okay with a whitewash effect that pushes you around some like flowing water already does (or like how dolphins do). Something simple, visually peaceful and lively with a slighty fun motion mechanic.

    Cherry on top:
In locations where a wave (whitewash) meets a block that is greater than level with the water (Z+1), it would be cool for a small splash against the side of the Z+1 block... like waves hitting a coastal rock wall.

maybe waves always go towards the nearest shore, so that you could build a giant island in the middle of the ocean, to have free water streams for farms?

I like this a lot, though perhaps it wouldn't be a "wave" in the normal sense of it. Perhaps these could be wave-like-mobs, mobs that look a lot like waves and could push you out onto shore.

Admittedly this does have some visual problems, such as how would it look if you had a bunch of waves just randomly moving? Wouldn't look right. So maybe these "Waves" (Wakes) would try to target the shore? And then despawn at the shore. Though if they weren't that common, about as common as Dolphins or Pufferfish (in a warm ocean biome), then I think there wouldn't be as many issues with it. As a bonus, this would give a player added reason to get in a boat, as they would be unaffected by the Wakes.

I don't think they should be hostile if this was to become a thing, however, it could be made so that the Wakes become aggressive during thunderstorms. During a thunderstorm they should try and drag you under the water instead of push you to the shore. Not very far under the water, just a few blocks under.

What do you mean by waves? Will the water rise and fall? Will it just be graphical? We will be able to turn it off, right?

Perhaps ocean currents could also be implemented, along with riptides.

This is something I've been thinking about as well. In my mind, they be able to use water blocks that are able to flow ONTOP of regular water. The waves would be tied to a line of these special water blocks that are teleporting in a specific direction/angle over the water. To keep the waves moving, the water has to flow away from the source blocks fast enough to extend to the furthest block it can before the source block line teleports again. This would be easy to impliment for one-block high waves (would mainly just be tweaking values in a water source copy), but I'm not sure how they would accomplish going any higher than that. They could possibly utilize the new feature of local water levels in caves and impliment it for waves? If they make boats able to float/row up flowing water, then it would be great. Bit of a rant, but I hope to see waves in the game.

Maybe pistons could create waves to as a method of entity transport and boats wobble on them??

Good idea in my opinion. It could damage boats and make it harder to swim.

Not only could that break many item transport systems, but it could also interfere with underwater base navigation (where you're in the water with a conduit). Not to mention it would also be hard to implement!
