The blocky slope of the coastline would ruin the waves breaking.

Waves should be reserved for addon packs. that feature couldn't match the them of minecraft. Also non transparent water surface textures would make the ocean a pit nicer and realistic to look at. instead of seeing the bottom from the top of a deep ocean biome. i like when i actually have an incentive to get out of my boat and swim to the bottom to search in the water instead of looking from the surface witch I find really boring and not fun. an alternative would be for water to not be so transparent when you are not in it but not fully untransparent aka realistic. a hybrid of sorts to give players the incentive to get wet and explore in the water rather than on top of it. would be fun and worth it imo. a good way to do this is to add the in water visibility effect to players outside of water but only apply it when a player is looking at water. like a texture effect overlay of the players view.

This is a great addition. The Minecraft seas are quie boring on the surface and waves would be great

What if the waves washed up seashells or other animals like crabs that you could trade with villagers. I think this is a pretty cool idea. It would make the oceans seem more realistic instead of just looking like a static pool of water. Maybe waves could be caused by a mob. The waves also could serve as another transportation method for the player, but instead of using boats, a player could use a “surf board” to travel short distances across the waves.

Even adding a sound of waves crashing in beach areas would be good.

I think a good way to give this feature purpose is making boat rides across the sea more strategic. You might be forced to take a route with shallower waters and less turbulent waves. You might only be able to use a normal boat during the day because tides get too aggressive at night. Speaking of which, new boat opportunities become open. Also building by the beach become a lot more strategic because you have to build your base to potentially go underwater during high tides at night

This is something I've been thinking about as well. In my mind, they be able to use water blocks that are able to flow ONTOP of regular water. The waves would be tied to a line of these special water blocks that are teleporting in a specific direction/angle over the water. To keep the waves moving, the water has to flow away from the source blocks fast enough to extend to the furthest block it can before the source block line teleports again. This would be easy to impliment for one-block high waves (would mainly just be tweaking values in a water source copy), but I'm not sure how they would accomplish going any higher than that. They could possibly utilize the new feature of local water levels in caves and impliment it for waves? If they make boats able to float/row up flowing water, then it would be great. Bit of a rant, but I hope to see waves in the game.

In addition, the possibility of generating energy or in minecraft's case: activating redstone could be the equivalent to hydroelectricity but in Minecraft.

    Really good idea

This would give depth strides a very important purpose. And maybe the water would obstruct the players vision above the water but with respration the effect would go away a little bit more as the ranks go up.

This idea could work, but those waves should leave certain materials that serve to create structures or to craft things, but they would have a chance that they leave behind a treasure map or other rare material to find. All this would only happen on the beaches.

I think this idea is great, water in Minecraft doesn't quite line up to real-world physics. This might help fix that. It could add a reason to implement large ships, say if certain waves can capsize small boats that Minecraft has right now! This really adds some challenge and adventure to exploring oceans.

This would be nice because it would add more danger and challenge to travelling in the oceans. maybe very large waves could sink boats and throw you into rocks.  being throw onto shore could cause significant damage.

Also if there's a storm going on huge waves should appear

Waves should not move entities, as in real life waves actually are stationary and do not actually move.

Perfect! I've wanted a beach update for so long!

I am highly in favor of this update.

For practical purposes the waves should by default only spawn within a players line of sight in any given direction over water and should by default be no more than a block tall and maybe two during thunderstorms especially where the water is deeper.

Waves for immersive and feature quality purposes should be entities that can effect boats though not in a damaging manner as long as the player is careful, they should break against blocks that extend over water and create temporary flowing water streams for blocks they crash over rather than into with both effecting the wave in a disruptive manner, and waves should carry items with them when they are dropped in the water ahead as well as some fish they encounter.

I believe this would work well in an update that also adds such features as the tides, tide pools, clams, and sea shells to create the full immersive beach experience rife with interesting and potentially useful or challenging mechanics to explore!

You could just get one of those texture packs that makes the water move. It doesn't interact with the items, but it does look nice.

Great idea. I feel like you could even add on this like tides, and maybe BIG WAVES that knock out a build thats too close to the water. This would make good fun for even finding a bay or a lagoon that doesn't spawn dangerous waves. Or finding a beach that doesn't have dangerous waves either.

Have the waves behave differently when raining; make them larger, and smaller when sunny

It should also spawn in shallow waters so there is waves at the shoreline

It could be that waves grow larger when the weather its rainy and become smaller when the weather is calm. Also this could lead to the addition of breakwaters or seawalls

Wave sounds would add to the immersion of the game, but I can’t imagine three dimensional or destructive waves fitting in Minecraft. But perhaps a rippling animation? Though I can imagine it would be extremely challenging to determine which blocks of water should have this and which shouldn’t, especially when blocks are being placed.

I like this a lot, though perhaps it wouldn't be a "wave" in the normal sense of it. Perhaps these could be wave-like-mobs, mobs that look a lot like waves and could push you out onto shore.

Admittedly this does have some visual problems, such as how would it look if you had a bunch of waves just randomly moving? Wouldn't look right. So maybe these "Waves" (Wakes) would try to target the shore? And then despawn at the shore. Though if they weren't that common, about as common as Dolphins or Pufferfish (in a warm ocean biome), then I think there wouldn't be as many issues with it. As a bonus, this would give a player added reason to get in a boat, as they would be unaffected by the Wakes.

I don't think they should be hostile if this was to become a thing, however, it could be made so that the Wakes become aggressive during thunderstorms. During a thunderstorm they should try and drag you under the water instead of push you to the shore. Not very far under the water, just a few blocks under.
