Why shouldn't it be called a scythe?  Scythes are literally used to harvest wheat.  It doesn't make as much sense for the root crops, but eh...

And no, the hoe does not already do this.  It could be an added function to the hoe, but it's not a function we already have in an item.

However, you CAN use a fortune enchanted tool to harvest crops to get more from them.  Wheat only gives more seeds, though.  It also doesn't use tool durability, so it won't waste your Fortune III pickaxe.

Scythe would be good for a few things. I have a post about weopons and Combat if you want to check that out. In my opinion the Scythe should- Be crafted in the Smithing Table when it gets functionality

-Deal the same damage as the Sword with the Sweep of the Broad Sword

-Yield a higher amount of crop

-Reduce chance of harvesting poisonous potatoes

-And have the same range as the Long Sword

To understand this info check out my Combat Update V2 post thnx for reading :)

    We have Pickaxes for Mining.

    We have Axes for Chopping.

    We have Shovels for Digging.

    We have Hoes for Tilling.

    We need Scythes for Harvesting!

Using a Scythe on fully-grown crops, gives you the item, and transforms the crop back to its first stage of growth, so you don't have to re-plant the crop.

Could come in a tool's typical varieties; wood, stone, iron, gold & diamond.

    Could be used on:

    Wheat

    Sugar Cane

    Bamboo

    Netherwart

    Ferns & Tall Ferns

    Flowers & Tall Flowers

    Grass & Tall Grass

    Seagrass & Tall Seagrass

    Lily Pads

    Kelp

PS. You should also require a Hoe to harvest the root vegetable crops, such as; Potatos, Carrots & Beetroots.

PPS. You should also require shears to harvest crops that you have to 'cut' off their respective plant. Including; Melons, Pumpkins, Sweet Berries & Cocoa Pods.

PPPS. It doesn't make sense to be able to harvest crops with your bare hands, when you'd require a tool to do so in real life!

@johnoad If you think it shouldn't be that basic then I guess the regular sword should be called a Katana.

    @Seb 103

While I agree that the Hoe would make more sense, I still think it should be the Scythe. I feel this is like saying that you use an Axe for all the chopping trees, but you use a Sword for Acacia because it's different

I think instead of making an entirely new tool, they should probably just add this function to shears.

By this function I mean this...

The shears would harvest wheat without destroying the plant, and may give you a slightly higher chance of getting more wheat...

I don’t think it should go beyond Wheat...

Shouldn't be a used like a weapon or comparable to one, aside from that I'd agree with this suggestion. Tools should not be weapons.

I think the scythe should act like a normal hoe except it does more damage and can be used in place of a sword. The Scythe would have a higher chance of dropping heads and skulls. The scythe would be crafted with a hoe and another material of its kind.

When using a scythe the drops should automatically get pulled into your inventory, Including mob drops.

The scythe should have another variant, the combat scythe. that would keep it from being OP. Other than that, good idea.

Trenix90 What about the Axe? It's a tool for wood based blocks and also a weapon that actually does more damage than swords, at the cost of charging time

for combat, I think it would be cool if it focused on speed, and sacrificed a lot of damage and knockback, maybe doing good at breaking shields and armor.

To flesh out this idea more:

    • The Scythe should be an upgrade to the Hoe.
    • It should retain all functions of a Hoe.
    • Crafted by combining a Sword and Hoe in an Anvil so the Hoe still has use early on.
    • The Scythe has a sweeping motion like the sword when left clicked.
    • When used on crops it "reaps" them.

When crops are reaped, it drops the crop yield and resets the seeds so you don't have to replant. It does this in a sweeping motion as stated earlier, making crop collection quick and easy.

Doubling as a weapon, it can make your suite of tools more useful and you don't necessarily have to carry a sword or axe on you at all times. You can "specialize" as a farmer this way.

I think scythes would be a great tool but should also be used as a weapon. Perhaps it could have the chains enchantment, as well as all the soul related enchantments from mc dungeons and be used to capture souls for artifacts.

Hey, Another idea for the Scythe:
realistically, If you break a crop with a scythe, the ones next to it will also break, As if you swung the long tool so that it reaches the ones next to to the crop you targeted.

What if the scythe can be thrown like a boomerang

While hoes are already used to farm, scythes can be their heavier variant with twice the amount of the crafting material. Scythes can harvest a lot more crops quicker and do more damage than a sword or axe. Scythes are also a little slower than axes.

It shouldn't have the ability to replant the seeds unless you add an enchantment possibly.

I voted for the scythe beacause it could become a really easy way to harvest crops but also be a great weapon.

    Minecraft Scythe: Proposal.
    ==========
The Scythe Weapon & Tool: Longer Reach: Semi Fragile: Situational.
    ----------------
I do support the addition, as it could be implemented.
Ever cut grass, tall grass in real life, I have, and have used a few of these in my time. I see the need in Minecraft when cutting weeds, and clearing a large area. This tool could reach farther out, destroying things fast, and would also work on trees.

    * Unique Damage: The Scythe deals the most amount of physical damage - but is situational, only used for certain scenarios, and only one equipped allowed.
    * Healer: 1/8 chance to heal you or your opponent, 3–7 hearts, random.
    * Freezer: 1/8 chance to freeze you or your opponent, random.
    * Semi-fragile, with a 1/8 chance of breaking - causing unblocked self-inflicted damage, random 4–8 hearts, 1/3 chance of possible self-freeze.

Rare 99: an end-game item, exclusively sold through the Wondering Trader for "massive" Emerald Blocks (500-1000). This would balance the global market and give the WT a unique and very important role in the game (selling rares).

    Thank You
