You should add living pigmen variants not as villagers or traders (the original, failed concept), but as warriors (like their zombie counterparts) that spawn in wool tent camps in plains, tundras, mesas, jungles, or savannas.
They would be neutral, only attacking the player when provoked, and hostile towards any monster mobs. The player could form an alliance with a tribe, by interacting with a single chieftain variant that spawns in the camp. In order to gain the Pigman Chieftain's trust, the mob will via GUI require you to complete a high level advancement in the game and an item to offer in peace.
When allied, the pigman tribe could protect the player, and follow some chat survival commands:
"~Follow" "~Stay" "~Cover" (would tell them to pathfind the nearest space underneath overhanging blocks). However, they will only Follow about 100 blocks away from the center coordinate of their generated camp.
There could also be a third, single variant of pigman that can trade with the player using gold ingots and/or nuggets as currency (or a new ore).
Zombie Pigmen: as the living pigmen conceptualized here would show more complex behaviors/functions than the zombie variant, zombie pigmen could also be updated with the addition of the new mob.
• Nether Pigman camps: a Nether variant of the generated Pigmen tents and camps could be added, with a boss-like Zombie Pigman Chieftain exclusive to these structures.
• Strategic/Militaristic behavior: to separate them more from the zombies, pillagers, and other group-attacking hostiles, they could have other mechanics to their fighting. Simply, when a player hits a hostile zombie pigman (not in neutral mode), the group of pigman will retreat back for a second or two, blocking with their swords to avoid getting hit by the player before retaliating once more.
Below are concept screenshots of the living pigmen simulated via resource pack. For details on the camp structures, visit the following feedback post: Add Pigman Camps (For Living and Undead Variants)
Your typical Pigman warrior. They can spawn with either a golden sword or a golden axe in hand, and sometimes a partial to full set of leather armor (but they never spawn with boots on their pig-hoof feet). All the living pigmen could wear a pendant as shown, resembling some possible new ore they value.
The trader pigman. Wears a coat and hood to distinguish it from the others.
The Pigman Chieftain. Will always spawn with an enchanted golden axe. Enchantments can be one of the following for a chieftain: knockback, smite, or bane of the arthropods.
The Zombie Pigman Chieftain boss (yes, I'll be working on a better name)
