Are you sure you want to report this?

Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical slabs.

Why a new block? Why don't we simply right click a bed or maybe a banner with the compass to set its target?

Because the waypoint should be some kind of redstone based device. It would make since for a redstone powered compass to be drawn to a redstone way point more than a bed or banner which are just wood, and wool.

It would also make making waypoints less easier to get. We want to travel, and explore, but we also want some sort of challenge. So putting the player through some measure of work, and crafting to get this waypoint block just makes good gameplay sense.

It would also add something new for people to try to decorate around if they felt like it. If not they can set it under their home, link up the compass, and pave over it with a floor.

I hope the compass can be named by a name tag too or in the anvil.  So there can be multiple compasses for different locations and not get them mixed up!

I don't know about a new block either.  Have to carry around too many blocks as it is!  Just right click would be better like SpecialisToL said.

If you think it should be a redstone device that does make sense though.  What if you have to put redstone down and then right click on it perhaps?

Placing the block and right clicking was what I suggested.

Remember I referred to it as a block, and it being used in decorations or to be placed out of sight.

This would also help so much if I need to find my way back, but also want to create a path or railroad system leading back! I'd know the most efficient path to take to lead me home; It'd be especially useful if I found a specific spot I want to come back to away from home. Great idea, you have my vote!

I agree with Morgorim the dark oonn how it makes sense for a Redstone compass to be liked to a Redstone powered block.

The compass should be more useful for mapmakers. My idea is for the player to enter coordinates and the compass to point the site. The clock should predict the weather.

I would just like the compass to point back to your last spawn point – either the world spawn or your last bed.

Ingenious idea! I would consider just rightclicking any block to re-adjust the compass to that block.

How about a new compass, crafted with the normal compass and four buttons? You could right-click with the compass and it would open a menu where you could save four locations, hence the four buttons in the recipe. With a location selected, the compass would point to those coordinates, guiding you to them.

Only to realize that you slept in a bed on your way to that location so you reset your spawn :)

Maybe it could point to the nearest beacon

    I disagree completely.

1: A map already tells you where you are in relation to it even if you are not on the map. Is your dot on the bottom right hand corner of the map? Go Northwest to get back on the map! This is an item that always points toward the same spot.

2: It is bad for creativity. If you build far from spawn, create roads, signal fires, towers, and the like to guide you from spawn to your base, or where ever it is you want to find. Nether portals with roads through the nether would also work and would be faster.

3: Having watched people play modded with mini maps and waypoints suddenly not have access to them, they are lost the moment they are out of sight of their base. Having to rely on your own sense of direction improves your ability to recognize land marks.

1 The map will only account for so much distance. Sooner or later you can go only so far before you don't even show up in the corner or the sides. Yes you could carry more than one large map, but that will then take up inventory space.
One big thing I have noticed with traveling far is you always wind up bringing tools that also take up more inventory space, and you always find stuff you want to take home which eventually maxes out your inventory space. Now you cant chuck your extra maps because you need those to get back home. If you had a waypoint marker set to your home there would be no need for the clutter of one or two extra maps for those of us who love long distance exploration. This rings doubly true when your playing on large biome and have to travel vast distances to find new things.
In gathering one free space of inventory can make a big difference.
It seems a waste of an infinite world to restrict the distance traveled by holding ones inventory spaces hostage.
2 I fail to see how a waypoint marker would keep someone from building a road. Lose your compass, and you need alternative means of finding home, and you just suggested alternative means that would be very viable to finding home should you lose your waypoint marker.
More importantly, minecraft is a game for creativity. I would be genuinely surprised if people didn't still build roads and such if not to have a clear and easy walkway then at least to make things look nice.

    continued here.
I think you are under estimating the general creative drive of the average minecraft player. I mean this game is basically an infinite lego box. Building and creating is one of the main appeals and it would take way more than a waypoint to stop people from taking advantage of one of the games funnest aspects.
This is more of a personal opinion than a viable argument.
3 You are talking as if there isn't already a way of doing this outside of modded minecraft.
There is a wonderful command called /setworldspawn .
You can also simply build at spawn for this same effect. This is technically something you can already do within the game, it just lacks survival game functionality.
You are talking about first playing with a mod, and then playing without a mod, however if the function is simply within the game then this statement becomes moot, because it is technically already there. I really see no issue with expanding on a pre existing non-mod aspect of the game.
To be continued one last time.

And the final piece of response.

But lets also take a look at this practically. The progression form starting your world and actually getting to the point of having a waypoint in the first place.
If you read through my idea, you'd be aware to make this happen you need a few things. a compass, and a redstone contraption[preferably an expensive one.] The waypoint block itself.
By the time you would get this made, you've likely been running all over the surface getting shelter setting up,  food, finding that ideal spot to call home in the first place, all the while without anything but a since of direction telling you where you are heading.

I don't get the purpose of the compass, unless you build a home at world spawn. It doesn't help you navigate in relation to the map (and we have F3 for that), it doesn't point towards your bed. Seems useless.

I would like some ability to set waypoints. A magnet/waypoint block, sign, bed, banner. Different compasses for different locations.

What i think is maybe there would be a new type of map that instead of showing your surroundings, it shows a list of places that you mark with the marker blocks (and you could rename the blocks) and how far you are away from them. It would help to have this "tablet" thing rather than carrying around 20 compasses all pointing different directions.

Also the "tablet" would be crafted with a compass and 8 markers around it (or 4 depending on how expensive they are to make).

The "tablet" wouldn't make maps useless as it doesnt show where you are, only how far you are from other markers.

I a gree with the idea of using a renamable waypoint that would show on a map. It wold be nice to mark points of interest to go back to later and name them.

    That is really good idea,

I just want it also shows  just the coordinates (instead of press F3) when you are holding the compass in your hand,

    that makes it more useful.
