THANK YOU!

Post has been reported succesfully.

Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things! Also, no furniture. No guns.

Let's stay on topic, folks. Thanks a bunch. :)

For hand held torch, I don't think Mojang can add it because they would be "stealing" Optifine's idea.  I believe Mojang offered to work with Optifine to add it into Minecraft but Optifine declined.  So I believe they aren't able to add that.

  • Avatar

Well that would be STUPID.  Everyone's asking for it.  Who cares what group is putting light-giving torches into un-modded Minecraft?  Mojang should figure it out without Optifine

Since optifine makes mods to minecraft then that gives minecraft the power to add it to the game, no matter what optifine says, optifine didn't MAKE minecraft.

  • Avatar

@Captain Kcaz if anything, if it does get added, optifine should be happy their clever ideas got added to improve the game unmodded.

Well, that would kind of ruin the point of crafting torches in the first place, and crafting any other light in general. It would also ruin the point of getting for torches when crafted. I understand why you want it, but it doesn't make logical sense to me.

@Bkid1290 that's not true.  The primary purpose of having torches that give off light in your hand is to eliminate one of the annoying hiccups of the game: which is having to be equipped with all those torches, and placing them down where you go for sight, and sometimes to keep monsters from spawning nearby, and when mining, you'll end up using torches and having to recollect them in a tunnel or cave devoid of any desired ores.

As for "ruining the point of crafting other light", that's where the creativity of Minecraft comes in.  In a lot of cases, torches aren't the prettiest light block to be placed down in abundance for a large structure.  Some or many players will definitely want more decorative light blocks, even in survival, for their homes or bases, like redstone lamps or sea lanterns.

So having torches that give off light in hand would not encourage neglect of the better-looking light blocks, or the use of sticks and coal, whether for torches or other crafting recipes by varying player preference or experience.

You can switch it into your other hand. For pe also!

I think the direction is great but I would suggest a niners helmet crafted using an end rod or redstone lamp with a golden helmet to craft it. The first half of the title is mine so a miners helmet would make a lot of sense

I love the idea of adding a lantern to the game

It was confirmed that mining helmets were rejected, because they are too modern. https://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/comments/8lcfke/silver_used_to_make_directional_lights_miner_hats/dzio7bu/

I agree but as long as they burn after a time and maybe not have the hostile mob despawn effect.

Be a great feature to the game, would save you from wasting tons of torches in caves.

No one cares who thought of it first,
It is a useful tool so it should go in the game

That's over simplifying things to the point where that statement is just plain false. It still needs to actually fit the game and not interfere with any existing game logic or the overarching themes of the game, and technical issues are also a major roadblock (dynamic lighting). If an idea passes those checks THEN that statement has some merit. Let's take this post for example. The major thing preventing the idea from taking root is with dynamic lighting and conflicts that would arise with the current lighting system. What would help the idea more than anything is to have people with more inside knowledge contributing to the discussion and perhaps offering up solutions to the problem, or to get more in depth feedback on the status of the concept. Honestly, if it were simple for them to add the feature, then it likely would have been done a long time ago. tl;dr There's a lot more that goes into determining whether a feature should be added or not, it isn't so one-dimensional, and quite often isn't as simple a process as it may seem.

Again, let's stay on topic. More torch talk, less mining helmets. Thank you!

I actually was staying on topic with that last comment, I was switching the discussion over to a more technical direction, since dynamic lighting is an inherent part of the potential feature in question, and from what I've seen, that is going to be the biggest hurdle to get over. Perhaps someone with more in depth knowledge or insight into the issue will be able to offer potential solutions or perhaps point in the right direction. And since lighted helmets are part of the post, it isn't necessarily off topic to discuss them, but regardless I won't mention them again.

True, maybe on other blocks and items that emit light...

Ever tried Optifine with dynamic lighting? exactly what you were describing. Also, Optifine should be part of vanilla Minecraft

  • Avatar

Also we should be able to hold them in the off hand like you duel wielding

Sorry I didn't read this until I posted the same request.

@Captain Kcaz you know... pistons were a mod until it was added into minecraft as an update

Having torches (or other light sources for that matter, topic is torches) glow when held would be a nightmare to program if it actually updated light (Optifine is client-side and purely visual, it does not light up anything to prevent mob spawning.)

@LegoSavant I know, deep down mods are ideas that they want implemented and that is how they show it.

yes place the torch in the off hand holding the torch i agree with this Minecraft player

I think this is a great idea. Along with this I would say colored lighting would be awesome. I don't believe anyone should be able to take the idea of torches that give off light that's just a natural thing that happens. Plus Terraria has this feature but 2D.

I agree. My girlfriend and I use optifine and when we go mining together, we carry torches in our offhand to lights our path. It's super useful and the only reason we installed optifine at all.
