Rather than creating entirely new blocks for stone variations (to help reduce inventory clutter) have stone change its tint and/or color depending in the biome like grass and water does.
Also like a previous idea where you get a fog-like effect in certain area (lava cave being smokey) similar to when you're under swamp water.

Please we need a cave update!!! And most importantly if you guys wanna please us like i really hope is your goal. please add in new ores please, specifically add copper!!!!!! It has so many uses and it could make new redstone wireing!!! The options are unlimited with copper as a new ore. new weaponds, new builds and just all around a new ore to look after while in caves!! Im an electrician so ik how importantly copper is needed on a daily basics!!! And your game is missig out on!! Please mojang add this ore please im bagging you we need a new ore we are long passed dew since emeralds. Like previously stated, copper could be used so so many "old builds" within the game and could be used for even more "new items added" as well. It dosnt have to just be used for redstone (TIP) theres many uses i feel it wouldn't be hard to add and wouldn't wast much time. Please cocider this option thank you!!

More minerals: I would love more types of ores added to a cave update, comparable to a real world equivalent. Ores that exist in a more recognizable geological places, like types of stone that pair with a certain mineral, like gold in quartz veins. Iron that exists in stone that is oxidized and stained a rusty red color. Nodules to be discovered inside of rock, like a Geode.

Cave biomes: Caves should have a verity of biomes, like lush, barren, crystal/cavern, ice, bio luminescence that are dry caves, or flooded and each have unique appearance with and eco system.

Ambiance: Caves should also have unique ambient sounds, music and fog.

Mobs: Also unique mobs would be nice, it could be more types of anthropoid mobs, but could be a mix of hostile/neutral/passive.

Loot: Caves can feature unique loot in chests, or some rare treasure hidden in the environment.

This is something we need ASAP! More ores, (GUNPOWDER ORE, mythril ore, titanium ore, copper ore, lithium ore) mobs, (cave mooshrooms, dusty zombies, decaying skeletons, lava type mob, stone golems, cave dwelling villagers) and stone types would be great! I think stone should be layered with standard stone being the top layer, granite making up the second layer, then andesite, diorite, and basalt. Near the bedrock layer should be massive caves.

I agree, a great cave update could reinvigorate the 'Mine' part of 'Minecraft'!

One idea I have to really intensify the cave update is to update spiders at the same time:

Make a 'Mother Spider' boss lair as a feature that can spawn as a new cave biome in addition to the regular one. Allow cave spiders to spawn naturally in these new spider lair cave biomes along with regular spiders and new baby spiders.

Make spiders actually turn sideways when they climb walls.

Make cave spiders also able to climb upside-down on ceilings (since they're smaller and presumably lighter than regular spiders).

Make spiders able to jump down at players from their climbing position on a wall, web, or ceiling, even through climbable blocks. (currently they catch themselves and climb down slowly, but they should be able to ignore the climbing state of blocks in their way if they *want* to drop down.

Allow Big spiders to spit out cobweb blocks at you to try and slow you down.

Have spiders place string vertically, by shooting it straight up at a block above them. All vertically placed string should be climbable by spiders and players like ladders, but string should hang by themselves in midair as long as the top string in a line is touching a block, not unlike vines from jungle/swamp trees.

The mother boss spider should capture everything that comes to her lair: monsters, players, everything except other spiders. When I say capture, I mean she should drop down on them, spin them around while wrapping them in a cocoon, then pull them up to stick them on the ceiling.

Her bite should cause paralysis, but when a creature is cocooned, they should still be alive, and if the cocoon is broken, they are able to walk and act like normal. Monsters should try to run from the queen spider, but never fight back. Even dogs should not attack the queen, because she does not hurt the player, only causes paralysis.

I think a caving update is the perfect time to update the Spiders, and I think we need some great reasons to fear arthropods so people will want to start using the bane of arthropods enchantment.

    I agree with this.

Something I would love to see for caves is possible mobs that only spawn in caves, new ores, different type of cave depending on location (The ice filled ones would be so cool!).

You should also add a type of mineshaft where if you step in the wrong place, it triggers a collapse.

The best thing Mojang could do for caves is make caves worth exploring. Ores and chests can be found in many other places. Caves are really only good for finding dungeons, and that's about it. There should be some unique item or treasure that can only be found in caves. Also, make mob spawners mineable! What better way to celebrate finding a dungeon spawner than to bring it back to your base as a decoration?

I believe the Nether and Caves could use more mobs, these are some mobs I either liked from the comments, or ones I just made up~
Abandoned Miners in Mineshafts: I have seen this one alot, and fully agree that it would be awesome to see. They could be hostile mobs armed with pickaxes and mining head lamps, these head lamps could have a chance to drop when killed, and could light your way when you wear it.
Sharks: I think everyone wants sharks at this point lol, and I saw a comment regarding underground oceans. Perhaps sharks spawn only in these oceans. They could drop Shark Teeth when killed, which could be used to make arrows with higher damage.
Pheonix: We need more flying mobs like the Phantom, and this would be a good addition. Pheonixs would spawn in the Nether and lava filled Caves, soaring around, perched on rocks, or even submerged in lava. I think a easy way to make it leave you alone is to wear a turtle shell, since a Pheonix would not like water.
Give Strays Ice Abilities: Give them freezing arrows and add them to frozen caves.
A big idea I have had for a while was to add ANOTHER DIMENSION as well!!! I think it could be the opposite of the Nether, a frozen world of snow, precious loots, and ice-based mobs. Instead of lava, it could have very darken water that freezes the player within seconds. Perhaps you could get armor or enchantments to not freeze up?

    Thanx for reading :)

Estoy de acuerdo con la sugerencia de estalagmita, y de mas minerales distintos, Porque esta bien los diamantes, esmeralda, el oro y otros más.

Pero que las cuevas sean conforme a los biomas encontrados que tengan alguna relacion.

I certainly agree that a cave update is due, but I also think that combat, mostly for java edition, needs updating as well. Seeing how combat isn't as big compared to a re-work to an entire world feature, it would most definitely be fitting to combine the two. I could see Mojang taking inspiration from the "Tinkers' Construct" mod by allowing you to use the fletching and smithing tables to forge new weapons with their own unique qualities (maybe new kinds of weapons, or maybe giving already existing ones new "traits," sort of like starting enchantments and/or new abilities). As for the combat, the current snapshot where you just hold the button in for melee weapons is easy. A ravager's loot can get ravaged in seconds! Perhaps they could add this functionality to a new, weaker weapon, like a katana for example, but keep the old functionality for a heavier weapon/tool, like axes, swords, etc. If you added different weapons with different "combat modes," you'd have a fighting style for everyone, which ropes in to the possible uses for the smithing table. With these major ideas for Minecraft alone of cave transformations and a combat rewrite, the next update for Minecraft would be revolutionary!

There's also this Spigot plugin called "Giant Caves," it doesn't add anything to the game except makes caves much larger, also causing them to be more damaging to people who dig straight down.

I have no idea if it has already been suggested as there are far too many comments to look through, but something I'd like to see in a cave update is unique dungeon designs. Currently, every dungeon for different mobs has the same square design and it'd be nice to give them unique looks.

It could have a non-square design or a twice as large design. Perhaps even add something like traps to them. I think dungeons would be a lot more exciting if this is done.

Adding some things that could make mining a bit more dangerous and exciting would make mining & spelunking much more fun and potentially more rewarding (ex. a high-risk, high-reward scenario). I'm not suggesting anything too drastic, just different biomes or differently-generated caves, perhaps. As for the danger, new cave-specific mobs (mobs that don't spawn above a certain Y) would be phenomenal. Other things such as quarries, which could be uncommon generations found above ground, would add a layer of realism that I believe the game is currently lacking in. In that same vein (ha!), adding dig sites (and maybe some variants for variety) could add in more danger, say, with TNT. Adding TNT to a new kind of underground dig site would not only make it more realistic, but give a new way to find TNT, since right now, players can only locate it naturally under desert temples. It could be added to abandoned mineshafts as well, all-in-all adding another level of risk and reward to the game. Maybe there could even be some non-abandoned mineshafts, who knows?

But really. The game is called "Minecraft," after all, and most players spend a ton of time in caves. (Not to mention that Minecraft was originally named "Cave Game.") Caves are an intrinsic part of the game, but they haven't been changed much at all since the game was out of alpha, (besides the addition of granite, andesite, and diorite). It's been the better part of a decade now, and caves have been essentially untouched (the same goes for strongholds, but that's a different conversation). The Update Aquatic and upcoming Nether Update are giving exactly the kind of love to the oceans and Nether that caves need, and they are proof that the Mojang team is capable of improving caves. I'm not here to rant like others might be, I'm here because I love this game and want to see it become the best it can be. Mojang, millions of people agree that Minecraft is amazing, and you have always shown the continuous dedication to improve upon it. I know that many people in the community have been laying on a ton of pressure for a cave update (and the return of 1.8.9 pvp, which I'd also love, but that again is another conversation), and I know that you can't please everyone. Living up to the expectations, especially with a game and fanbase as massive as this one. But, I'd argue that the majority want the cave update, and you'd probably rake in revenue.

So, that's my spiel. Whether you are going to add a cave update or not remains to be seen, and I'm not here to make the decision for you. At the end of the day, I'm probably just another voice in the crowd. But if you got this far, whether you're on Mojang's team or just another player like me, thank you.

what about glow worms? They would dangle from the ceiling like bats do and wiggle around a bit. They could be used to craft some sort of fertiliser to increase the growth and/or turnover of crops and to make a new light source? Perhaps you could make your armour glow to be able to see around you, or eat one to make yourself glow but with a weak poison effect?

    Im waiting for the cave update and i have ideas like these;

    - Ruby Ores.

    - boss mobs near the spawners

    - Icy caves

    - Magma caves

    - Hot Stones (like when the stone is near to lava the stone will be hot and give us damage.)

    - Stalactiles.

    - Bats Private Caves (and please update bats)

    - more featured villager mines.

    - Underwater caves (like there will be water in the caves)

    - more deep world (like its finish at 0 but i think it can go like -1 , -2 , -3, etc.)

    - New texture for Spider (and please make spiders a little bit small)

    - New Texture for Lava.

    - New Texture for Water.

    - New Texture for Bats.

    - Underground treasures.

    - Undertale Mash-up (please)

These all needs a very big work but i think you can do it! ;)
