Hi !
We spend a lot of times in caves in minecraft but they didn't get any new or exiting features since a long time, that's why I think a cave update is due !
Some ideas :
- Caves biomes of diferent types of caves depending on the biome it's generated into, for example : Ice caves, bats infested caves, lava caves, etc
- Stalagmite and Stalagtite in caves, should be blocky, maybe like cobblestone walls
- More mushroms in thsoe caves?
- Mobs spawning only in caves?
There is a lot that could be done so that just some ideas, also the nether is a big caves, so it could be updated at the same time !

I would very much like to see this, There isn't a lot of time spent in the caves once you find what you need and put some mending on your tools. I play on Java edition and maybe some new cave features like new ores or materials could be added.

With the cave update you should also update dungeons! They are too easy and have have almost no challenge. So all you basicly get is free loot. You should make them much harder or add more to them. Curently they are only a box. But what you could add is some more decoration and more rooms to them. That way they are actually fun and challenging.
It’s a really good idea but I don’t really want minecraft to be a almost exact copy of terraria if you know what I mean? But I would like more additions to the underground caves and all I do agree with you but yeh.
What I think is that we just need more ores in the caves so then those ores come into play into different things like a ore that has a magnetic pull to things like iron or gold, but even to make things better a Elevator that works and is made into the game instead of having to make a red stone contraption that takes up most of your time doing other thing
This would definitely add so much more to the game!!! A perfect example of why a cave update should happen is this: When I'm wandering around different biomes, I just hope that I'll find a village or some type of structure. Or something really cool. What can I say, I really love villages and structures!! When in caves, I can hope for finding a mineshaft, dungeon with a spawner in it or finding caves and deep ravines that lead to lava and diamonds, but it hasn't gotten an update in a while like a lot of people are saying. Those things that I just mentioned are great, don't want to make people think I don't think that they are, but imagine having so much more cool stuff in caves like new mobs and structures! Would just be incredible!! Definitely has my vote!
This is a really good idea (*whispers* thanks Ibxtoycat) anyways I think adding individual cave biomes is a good idea, but what about cave biomes in the Nether or the End with more than just Quartz ore within the Nether. Just an idea
- Sinkholes you have to watch out for. Some pits are have a solid block at the bottom and are only deep enough to deal 2 hearts of fall damage. Others are much deeper, but have water in them. You won't die, but now you are thrown of your course and have to dig yourself out.
- Karst caves. These come in different shapes and sized, but tend to be wide and winding with tall ceilings. Their walls are made out of diorite, limestone. Limestone can be crafted into chalk. Chalk is used for freehand drawing on eligible blocks. Hold down the right mouse button while holding some chalk in your hand to draw. Might wanna draw some arrows in caves so you're sure to find a way out.
- Ice Caves. These are very dangerous. Look closely and you will notice that some Ice Blocks are cracked. Stand on it a bit and it breaks, so you have to make haste. But ice is slippery so rushing to much might make you slide right into a death trap as clefts, crevices and fissure are many. Even worse, you may encounter a Wampa. Wampa is a deadly white giant with a fierce attitude. Just ask Luke Skywalker.
- Atmospheric elements. Soda straws, stalagmites, flowstone, batcaves, fungi, vines. And can you find a rare Desert Rose crystal? It's coral, but made out of gypsus.
- Sixlegger mob. Sixlegger resembles a Polar Bear, but has six legs. These solitary creatures wander around the caves looking for mushrooms, Glowfish and minerals to lick. He evolved in caves so his white eyes are almost blind. Bright light is painful for Sixlegger so he will promptly run away from bright light sources, even a torch held in hand. You will finally implement dynamic light, right? Sixleggers fur accumulates phosphorus from all the Glowfish he eats so it emits a dim glow with a green tint. Sixleggers is aggressive in the dark and will chase you to the best of his ability. He also sometimes stands on his back legs and then drops a heavy attack on you that inflicts Stun.
- Speleologist. A Wandering Trader of caves. The only person to trade you a helmet with a mounted light source.
- Climbing equipment. A fast and easy way to move down cliffs. Uses slime balls to craft so not easy to get for a lot of explorers.
- More depth. Currently you can get to y12 in 5 minutes and start stripping for diamonds. Wooden, golden, iron equipment is mostly useless. Making caves deeper and more challenging will emphasize the rarity of diamond and will make explorers stick to iron more. Lower levels become progressively hotter and require heat management. Heat makes your satiation decrease faster, decreases you walking, mining and attack speed and decreases damage. To counter heat you need gear with heat resistance and cooling potions.
- Cave maps. I really don't know how to properly implement this, but I would love them.
I say implement a majority of the ideas about the underground, caves, dungeons, mobs and bosses into 1.16.
Everything that has to due with turning these new ores into tools and armor, improving tools and armor, or anything to do with trading, new armor, new tools, and enchantments should be saved for 1.17.
For 1.18 however, that should be the "Music Update" add dozens of new music disks, musician villagers who trade music disks. Allow the player to compose their own music. New speakers, specialized jukeboxes and note blocks, instruments, etc.
You guys have got your work cut out for ya. Best of luck, cheers.
Ore generation could be different as well. Ores would have a higher chance of generation in some biomes, while less of a chance in others. For example, coal would be found in greater quantities in deserts and swamps, but in less quantities in, say, the tundra. This would add to the fun and challenge of finding these ores.
Add a sub-level. add a new block, "hardened stone?", that replaces the bedrock layer and make it mineable with a diamond pickaxe, a little slower than mining obsidian. Add another 64 blocks ranging from 0 to -64 (move bedrock down to -64) make it incredibly dangerous, you need enchanted diamond armor to even survive down there. A new boss?
