    1. There could be redstone traps down in the mineshafts.
    2. Leaves/vines could be hanging from the ceiling of caves close to the surface.
    3. Traces of past civilizations who used to live there in form of man made dungeons that were built by them underground could be implemented as a generated structure. For example - Rougelike Dungeons Mod.
    4. Occasionally zombie villagers could be found in small semi demolished rooms in the cave.
    5. A youtuber named Grian made a video couple months ago about the changes that could be made to dungeons to improve their design.

Idea for a mob for the cave update: some sort of creature that you can find infesting certain ore blocks, similar to how silver fish can infest certain stone blocks. When released, they would try to attack you, and if you get too far away, they will "dig" into the stone and despawn. When killed, they will drop the smelted drop of the ore they were in, as well as drops from other ores they can infest. They shouldn't be able to infest all ores, maybe only iron, gold, redstone, and lapis, so that the drops they provide aren't too powerful. As for how exactly the mob would look, maybe it would be similar to mob c from the original mob vote, maybe with different texturing to match the environment better, and a slightly smaller head.

I think extending the depth of caves (maybe doubling or tripling the average surface height, which is currently roughly 64) and making the caves progressively larger and more complex is a completely necessary addition. Also a few structures or adding more to the current structures, along with biomes like ice biomes, desert biomes (underground tombs), or even jungle biomes that have cool traps or indiana jones like sequences. there are so many missed opportunities by not expanding the underground.

Somethings I'd like to see are

the addition of crystals as a new currency to use with the villagers

at about Y:55 and above caves have blocks from the biome their in (oceans primaries is mixed in with the stone, deserts sand/sandstone, plains dirt, forests dirt and roots, ect)

backpacks and mining helmets that emit light could be sold in new underground villages by cave dwellers

caves with grass floorings and trees will spawn randomly, nearby zombies and skeletons will attack you if they hear the tree breaking

    caves should be bigger overall

Maybe we could have some new crystals and ores that only show up on the surface of caves so we have to go caving instead of strip mining,

ghost's would be cool, It would spawn in mineshaft's and maybe can be a spawn form a spawner in a dungeon and can go through 1 or 2 block thick walls, and make's echoing sound that can be heard form 12 or 8 blocks away.

i have a few ideas for mobs that could be added in there with the update !
    - tommyknockers, based on the myths associated with the ghosts of dead miners. maybe spawn in abandoned mineshafts? ghost miners who warn you of danger lurking in the darkness...
    - goblins!!!! maybe you could trade them food for ores, or maybe theyll just steal from you? very feisty
ill admit that these arent the best ideas ^^"

There was a comment by Mc Rat that I'd like to elaborate on.

He mentioned the progression system of ores and he had a wonderful idea of a layer of rock that needs to be broken to increase how deep you can travel.

Now imagine, making the underground deeper, I mean way deeper, and adding layers of rock, perhaps 3-4 blocks deep that can only be broken by a certain pickaxe. So perhaps the first layer is a rock, let's call it "Stonerite" And it spawns at around 15-20 blocks below the surface across the Overworld. This block is impossible to break with a wooden or stone pickaxe, and a new ore is needed, 'Copper'. Now copper will allow you to create tools and armour and is slightly better than stone, but less so then Iron. The only ore found in the stonerite level is copper and coal.

Now we break the stonerite layer, here we will find copper, iron and coal. Now, this continues for another 20-25 blocks until there is a new layer of which requires iron to break. You can make the ores required to break the layers rare on their respective layers and more common the deeper you delve.

Let's say after iron you need gold or a new type of iron like black-iron or even steel to break the next layer after the iron layer. These are just some quick thoughts, you'd also need to implement caves on top of this as well but I think it adds some progression. I don't think you would be able to break the layer blocks with TNT either.

In a Cave Update I‘d really like to see new ores. I would like to see new functional ores like redstone that could possibly expand the tech side of Minecraft but I’d also like to see another armor and tool ore. Netherite is great but it’s such a minor step up, I’d like to see something extraordinarily rare that would be absolutely game changing compared to diamond (and maybe with that new mobs to meet the power level this new armor and tool set would wield). Overall I feel like Vanilla Minecraft stagnates after diamonds and enchants, I really want a reason to go back in the caves after I’ve looted all my top tier gear from End Cities.

Definitely. While I never really feel bored mining, I certainly feel like the experience could be spiced up a little. Caves and mineshafts can be kind of exciting to go through, but new mobs/ores/items would make the experience a whole lot more interesting.

I heard a certain Youtuber say this, but it would be so cool if there were more lapis variants! Like Ruby’s, saphires (could replace lapis), topaz, etc. Each one would influence the chances of getting certain enchantment. For example, maybe ruby used instead of lapis could influence sharpness over other types of enchantments in swords. Maybe other things like diamonds or even nether scraps could be thrown into the mix to encourage enchantments like unbreaking or flame/fire aspect/ fire protection. This sounds super dope!

    Maybe some new ores
I like that we have our classics coal iron gold Diamond and emerald but we need a refresher! Add some new ores with some new weapons and armor and make it that it can only be found in curtain cave systems or cave biomes and maybe make emerald and gold more useful like emerald can be armor and weapons and since it’s so rare it can get better enchantments and base damage!

Maybe more gems/ores? Copper, steel, and tin would be nice. Cave mobs would be cool too. Like Cave Ghosts, or Miners that trade ores with you like an underground villager.

I've seen a few comments mentioning gems or crystal formations in biome specific caves and would love to see a tie in from another post regarding a volcano biome.

My general idea is that gem caves would spawn under volcanic biomes and gems would have a rarity similar to emerald. The gems would act as a greater version of lapis lazuli and allow the player to force a stronger enchantment by placing it in the enchanting table alongside their item. Possibly showing more enchantments on the preview and giving a better idea of what you'll get for your levels. As a way to balance the feature I would make those enchantments cost more XP levels. As an extra layer of difficulty they could make netherite items only enchantable via the gems. The power creep in the game has been stagnant for a very long time and I think the addition of more materials would make advancing more challenging by introducing a small amount of grinding that hasn't been present in Minecraft in a while.

Another possible feature would be gem variations. Different colored gems would guarantee certain enchantments like red gems giving fire resistance, fire aspect, or flame; blue gems being associated with water-centric enchantments and so on.

This might be too convoluted but I've seen Minecraft's enchanting become easier over the years and believe the system has made enchanting less special than it should be.

I think something that would be very interesting to see is more environment in the caves.
Like the comic Satania, which features a version of hell which is an eclectic organism/biosphere

Another interesting addition would be cavern systems, like large open areas larger than ravines. This would likely mean revamping the chunk generation though so that the height limit could be better.

More ores can be nice, but what purpose would they have? Netherite is currently the best material, and that was a very big step. NTM powercreep. Maybe new ores in the form of silver, copper, and gems like sapphire would be magic related?

Also I think sapphire would be an interesting addition as a decorative gem block with multiple colours (because did you know that sapphires come in basically all colours but red? Red is ruby, but its the same composition as a sapphire)

I would really love to see the Ruby come but not for armor and tools. Perhaps it could be used to give better enchantments than lapis would. But there would be a limit that I would like to see the devs come up with. Maybe some sort of boss or golem could be summoned.

I would love to see something else done with abandoned mine shafts, like maybe have mine shafts (not abandoned) in some villages.

I would just love to see some new structure like a dungeon :)

I believe when the cave update is implemented it should bring more variants of stone. If Cave biomes were added, they should use different stone variants, such as limestone, serpentinite, peridotite and more. The main reason for adding more stone types is to add more colour variation, as well as more building blocks, that would require exploration to find. It would be ace to have light brown, grey-green or even bluish kinds of stone to use, especially if they had brick variants.

Caves should have more reason to explore them and more reason to go mining in different biomes. This should be in the form of exclusive building and crafting materials, or at least far easier access. Each biome should also have mobs which offer their own challenges. E.G.

Smokestone Caverns: Flatter, wider caves and caverns with smokestone: a block that lowers light emission from light sources, and increases chances of mobs spawning. This biome could feature the old Void Fog effect. Useful as Smokestone could be used to make more efficient mob farms, and only generates in this biome.

Icy Caves: Wide open spaces, divided by walls of ice. Could have Mirrored Ice to disorient players, and a new ore: Frost Shards. These could be used in potions to give the freezing effect, which would slow entities and damage them over time. Could also be traded for enchanted books that apply would apply a Frost enchantment, which gives the same effect as freezing but in a melee form (perhaps weaker so as not to nullify usefulness of potion)

    More Biome Ideas:

Collapsing Caves: Tall caverns, and winding caves that pass over one another, filled with floating patches of gravel that may fall at a moments notice. Could also include Crumbling Stone veins - hey look like normal stone, but if you stand on them too long the veins suddenly turn into gravel and fall out from beneath you! Adds another element of danger akin to Infested Stone. Potions of Slow Falling would therefore be very handy if mining here.

Ancient Caves: Filled with swirling mists and strange fungi, beware of where you tread for you never know what status effect something may give you. Should be able to find an exclusive new ore that allows you to gain better enchantments than Lapis.

Dwarven Ruins: Basically the Mines of Moria. Deep abandoned halls where you can find ancient chests and hoards of gems, but beware, these halls were abandoned for a reason!  But who knows what fell creatures have overrun these once beautiful cities. Banners and beds may be found here.

Maybe cave villages could be a good idea. As these villagers have spent their whole lives in caves, they could have special trades for ores, or new exiting weapons. I really hope this gets added into the game :D

We should have to build cave supports after a certain depth(similar to the abandoned mineshaft supports), maybe under 25 blocks, it would be cool as we see supports but we never have a real reason to use them except for the aesthetics
