a cave update would be neat but we probably wont get one for a long time, you may ask why, but the reason people want one is the reason it would take forever: Caves are a HUGE part of minecraft, making a cave update would change a lot of stuff, so it would take a long time.

i would love a cave update with a more of an eerie feel to it.

some ghost mobs (that could go through walls or just be semi-transparent), new forms of zombies such as miner zombie, since we have drowned and husks.

I think that this would be really cool. We could have a system where the deeper the caves get the more dangerous they get too. So monsters get better gear and more health. Also, rarer materials would spawn lower down. This would make room for tons of new features.

    New ore idea: Baconite

It would be as rare as gold is in the mesa, but it would only be found in the plains biome. You can craft tools/weapons out of it, or you can eat it to restore 1 hunger bar. The tools would be in between iron and gold, with durability closer to gold (but not too close). You can eat the tools, too, restoring as much hunger as the amount of baconite used to make it (e.g. a pickaxe would restore 3 bars, but the sword would restore only 2), and giving back 1 stick.

Make a ore that is better than diamond that we can make new armor with like ruby or rainbow ore that would be cool if you did that

Taking some inspiration from the Legend Of Zelda series, maybe have pots that you can break with a sword, dropping iron and gold nuggets, woth the occasional ingot, and maybe hidden chests that have keys that unlock special 'key doors' that block the player from getting into places like the end portal rooms without a key. Also could make the walls around locked rooms three layers, stone, obsidian, stone.

you can add new minerals, such as gems that could open the door to a new set of magical weapons!

What about some more cavern shapes? For example: large domes, horizontal rifts (equivalent of ravines but lying), or vast and deep porous zones (with as much stone as empty space, more or less like a sponge). Also, real underground rivers digging tunnels.

(Maybe should I post a separate thread for that?
EDIT: To develop my ideas, I commented this post about Underground Topography instead.)

Tungsten: a new, semi high durability metal that’s tools and armor will not be destroyed upon contact with fire or lava. Also adds fire protection. Titanium: faster swing speed for tools, stronger than iron, but really rare

I say scratch the idea of mobs only in caves, and make new mobs for caves.

New mobs could be cave fish that spawn in pools generated in new cave biome. Cave crickets could be hostile or neutral arthropod mobs.

I've read through quite a large chunk of comments on this thread and think there are tons of amazing ideas here. This would make an incredible next update. Will this be 1.17?

I think that in a biome with heaps of hills surrounding a volcano. Underground should be a portal leading to a new dimension of just caves but any ore can spawn at any level. But you have to be skilled and have good armor to beat it as there are new mobs [Giant worms, moles and anything that will go through the ground in real life] that are extremely powerful.

Now there might be new ore [better then diamonds] that only spawns at bedrock but is worth getting. This ore is necessary for making the pickaxe so you can start mining in to the new boss area. This new ore is esential to beat the monsters easily and have free roam over this demention.

I know that technically it isnt part of the cave systems but I think it would work with some other peoples ideas and if there is something someone said like this then sorry but im not reading the whole 25 pages.

Cave update needs to involve some variety of "underground wood"

the new netherwart forests could also drop wood from the stalks as well,

The ability to gather wood in these environments is critical to some gameplay styles where you remain underground perpetually.

Maybe there is a chamber that has chests in caves that's like a ritual cave and there's maybe a hidden skeleton spawner but the skeleton has a diamond sword or something. I guess it's a little more on the adult side, but it'd be cool.

Caves are way too boring, structures such as dungeons, strongholds, and mine shafts need a new look. Instead of that small 7x7x7 room, there could be multiple rooms, maybe even layers, same thing for mine-shafts and strongholds, maybe surface level entrances, to both make it bigger and easier to find. As for caves They need to be bigger and more tedious to get through, more treasures and secrets, lost ruins and discoveries to help carry the lore of the game in a very small way.

There was going to be a new ore, but they chose not to do that. They could also add that ore, it was called ruby.

I play Minecraft: Pocket Edition, and you are right, caves need a massive overhaul as villages did in 1.14! But we were announced a Nether Update in Minecon Live 2019, so that's at least fine. Maybe Dungeons, Abandoned Mineshafts, and Strongholds could also be updated? But caves in general need an overhaul.

Definitely would suggest crystals that could (i guess) be made into armor and weapons which would be around the same strength as iron but a little bit lower but I think more gems and stone and different cave generation and just something new. I feel overall that caves are pretty boring overall to explore an update would really be nice to explore

(Tamable Bats that you can send off to surface to retrieve food items while you explore)

Is it weird I think we should also be more than one kind of bat and we should be able to tame some bats? Like we can tame fruit bats insect eating bats are neutral and vampire bats are hostile. Maybe fruit bats could carry a small amount of things caves are to tight an area for mules llamas and other carrier animals but fruit bats a pretty big and really strong so the could maybe do that?
