Hello there! I’m MacchuPicchu96, and this is one of my quick ideas. Enjoy!
One of the items Mojang is adding in the new Update Aquatic is Dried Kelp. Now, Dried Kelp doesn’t seem to stand out very much with its 0.5 haunches of hunger restoration, but one particular feature is extremely interesting: Dried Kelp can be, in the words of the wiki, eaten “more quickly than most other foods in the game.”
I think this concept of variable eating time should be extended to every food in the game. In real life, eating a cookie is a matter of seconds, while consuming a steak can several minutes. In Minecraft, however, it takes just as long to munch through a cookie as it does to scarf down a steak. Therefore, I propose that the length of time it takes to eat a food should be directly proportional to the amount of hunger it restores, with some exceptions: for instance, non-tasty foods like Rotten Flesh and Spider Eyes could take longer to swallow than their nutritional value might suggest.
The most important impact of this change would be that almost every wholesome food would have its own advantages, not just processed, high-end foods. Foods like Melon Slices are low on nutrition but would be quick to eat, which could be more convenient for low-danger situations or those who simply like faster eating times. Foods like Cooked Porkchop might take three or four seconds to consume, which admittedly is an inconvenient “nerf”; however, they do heal you much more quickly once eaten, which would be useful in more dangerous situations. Foods like Bread would be somewhere in between. And Cake can be eaten instantly because, well, of course you should be able to eat it instantly, it’s cake!
