A wolf's fur pattern should be dependent on the biome it is found in; just like in real life. An ocelot, when tamed, becomes a cat. But a wolf, when tamed, is a tamed wolf? This doesn't make much sense. I seen in the comments that someone wants a Corgi in the game. That my friend would be an add-on as it doesn't fit with the flow of the game. Taming a wolf should not create a Corgi...because that doesn't make sense. You just gave a wolf a bone and now it turned into a small Corgi (that is the result of tons of breeding). A tamed wolf should just be referred to as a dog. It should also generate different fur patterns once tamed different from the wolf, just like an ocelot and cat do. This makes the most sense.
We should either separate dogs and wolves like they did to cats. If they do that, we should still be able to take a wolf as well as a dog. The wolves stay the same but all you do is add a separate dog mob that looks like a wolf but with different skins.
Yeah different dog breeds should be added in! Each dog breed could have a tiny quirk like, dogs known for retrieving would bring the player random items every now and then and dogs known for hunting would have a higher attack. But the more simple option would be to make all dog breeds bring the player random items. Also it would be nice if a dog tag would appear on the dog's collar if the player uses a name tag on a tamed dog.
I also think that there should be a "roam" option for them to be able to move around without following you. Let's say you leave them outside in a danced area, they should be free to roam around and not just stay sitting down in one place it will look a lot more lively
I think if this is going to be breeds instead of just colour, then only bigger breeds should be included. I don’t think a pug, a chihuahua or other small dogs would be good at fighting. I would also like if different breeds acted differently. Ex: some are faster, some are stronger, some have further vision, etc.
It would make a lot of sense if mountain dogs of some kind were added in the Caves and Cliffs update to aid the player to explore the mountains. This could be to make it easier to get around with a sled and potentially steak on a stick for directing the dog in the right direction.
It should work like how ocelots used to work, where the dog texture is random, but looks like different breeds of domesticated dogs (though I feel the wolf option should also be available too). I would love to see some size and model change to reflect the dogs breed and traits if possible.
Since every dog comes from a wolf I think at first when you tame them they should turn into similar dogs like huskies or german shepherds. But by breeding your tamed dogs you would get new breeds like beagles, bulldogs, greyhounds, etc.
I like this idea just not the 'skin for looks and not for the purpose'. I think it would be more interesting if there could be rare different types of canines (that could have more use to them than just doing the same; gaining your love, running into lava/water/mobs or jumping off a cliff, dying, making you cry for the next 3 days). If we gave these rare dogs/wolves certain attributes and different stats geared towards different jobs, like; Sheepdog(would protect sheep from other wolves), Watchdog (something like it would sit somewhere in a village and give an alert when pillagers are attacking, or a golem is about to die), Leaddog (attach a lead to the dog and attach that to a horse or some type of mount, the dog will lead the horse wherever you go or if they lose you), Bombdogs (sniffs out trapped chests and nearby TNT blocks), Seadog, Hotdog, Hounddog/trackingdogs, etc. (all the puns). These additions would expand the function and utility of canine friends in Minecraft.
Not all the names I listed have thought out uses or usefulness, but hopefully you understand the point I'm trying to get at. I don't think ALL of these ideas/prompts should be used, but just a few to make it special.
I thought up the idea when I had just finished penning up some chickens. I had left and came back to breed them, but only found their items remains, along with a fox snuggled up fat on the ground. I hopeing for a four-legged friend that can protect my livestock while I'm away.
