The Protection enchantment was nerfed alongside Sharpness, and the end result is that a single attack from a Sharp V diamond sword against full Prot IV diamond armor is still greater than it was in 1.8. At least, I think the current 1.08 dmg per hit is pretty significant.

As for gold, I do really appreciate the idea of having all gold tools be faster variants, and I don't really see the need for them to be quite so fragile. But on the idea of attack speed for the sword, there unfortunately isn't much that can be done at the moment in that regard, because swords already swing so close to the maximum rate permitted by damage immunity. That is to say, when a player or mob is hurt, they blink red for half of a second, during which time they can't properly be hit again. The attack speed of 1.6 is already within a tenth of a second of that rate, so increasing the speed on the gold sword to 1.8, or anything else, doesn't really do much for it.

This need to be fixed. The sharpness 5 diamond sword used to have 13.5 Attack damage, but now its only 10. This thing was nerfed and I don't like it. You should still be able to have 13.5 attack damage because you have worked hard to get the enchantment. For example, a zombie is 3 hits with a sharp 5 diamond sword! It used to be 2! This is not necessary.
