Chainmail armor is almost worthless. Let’s fix that

Chainmail armor is one of the least desirable varieties in Minecraft. Diamond armor is the most protective, iron armor is generally the cheapest and affords decent protection, golden armor looks awesome and has a high enchantability. Even leather armor can be dyed in all sorts of fancy colors. I believe this is unfair to chainmail armor.

  • If we are going to buff chainmail armor, we need to make it rarer first. Remove chainmail armor trades from armorer villagers, and make chainmail armor repairable only by combining them with other pieces of chainmail armor in an anvil.
  • To make chainmail armor desirable, I propose making it increase the wearer’s Max Health when worn. For instance, the chestplate and leggings could each give +3 Max Health, while boots and helmets would give +1 Max Health.
  • A good follow-up would be to adjust the Enchanted Golden Apple’s status effects to Absorption III and Regeneration III, so that the maximum possible health would be a nice, even 40 health (20 normal health + 8 chainmail armor health + 12 Absorption III health).

I believe that if these changes were implemented, chainmail armor would become an exciting and useful mid-game, mid-tier armor choice for those lucky enough to get them from skeletons and zombies.

    This sounds interesting and fun.  I wonder if it would also allow armorers to sell more pieces of diamond armor if they are no longer selling chain mail.

    I think its a better idea make it able to be enchanted with max health instead of max health by default.

    @TurfyTurtle663 That's also a good idea, but I still like my original idea best just because it's something new and different. (My idea was inspired by CTM mapmakers, who use this mechanic all of the time.) Also, since the only way to get chainmail armor in my idea is by mob drops, half the time they'd be enchanted already and you wouldn't be able to get the max health on them.

    Hey MagicDiamond40, I never take offense with someone's disagreement, but I do have a few questions:

    - Do you agree with my premise that chainmail armor needs a bit more love? If you don't, why not?

    - If you do agree with my premise, then why do you dislike my particular solution, and what solution would you rather see?

    I can see that you want to see Chainmail Armor have more of a use but I don't see how it could give the player more health.

    Blast Burner, this idea was inspired by some of the CTMs I've played in the past, where special armor pieces give you potion buffs, extra health, faster walking speed, etc. Do you have a better solution? If so I'm up to hear it!

    Stagman, I believe that it means that items with higher enchantability (like gold armor pieces, weapons, and tools) have a higher probability of getting more than one enchantment at a time.

    I agree chainmail needs a rework, and I agree with most of what you propose. However, I don't think the absorption/extra health idea makes a whole lot of sense to apply to chainmail. That seems like something you'd get from an item made using a totem of undying, or some other item. I think what could work is if chainmail provided 100% protection from melee and projectile attacks, but no protection against fire, magic and explosions. So you could wear it and charge into a horde of zombies, and come out without a scratch, but if you go fight a witch or a blaze, or fall in lava, it won't help.

    I agree that chainmail armor needs a little extra love, though I don't like your specific suggestions as much. I would personally love to see it have similar uses to what it had in medieval combat, specifically by being better against axes than against stabbing-type weapons. I think this would add an interesting contrast to shields if it were implemented right. P. S., thank you for the polite way you respond to the people who disagree with you. It has encouraged me to read more of your comments, even though I disagree with some of them! ;)

    RoyalRex2 Better protection against axes is actually a fantastic idea, you should make a post about it! And if there's one thing rarer than a nice person on the internet, it's someone who is willing to complement other people for being nice - thanks for making the internet a better place ^_^

    Or we could just simply give it durability that's higher than iron but not as high as diamond, instead of over-complicating it.

    No it should be craftable but it crafted with iron nuggets. It could be high protection (iron level) but low durability (leather level)

    MacchuPicchu888 I Agree with your premise that Chainmail Armor needs more love, but....                                               

    I don't understand how Chainmail Armor has these buffs.(from a real-life perspective)I Liked the idea of Mojang implementing a rare, useless item that is purely for bragging rights (Like the Dragon Egg) Instead of making buffs that don't make sense with Chainmail right now, how about this:

    A) Make Chainmail armor cost more when trading with villagers. Right now, you can trade an emerald for a Chainmail Helmet (I Play Bedrock only, apologize for any misconceptions with Java Players :> ), while it takes Five for an Iron Helmet. Chainmail Armor should cost as much as, or even more than Diamond Armor, as in 13-17 Emeralds for Chainmail Leggings. 

    B) Make it only available at the Journeyman Level. (Instead, maybe gold armor for the Apprentice)

    C) Make it no longer available via buried treasure chests (which also gives another reason to go to mansions), and Nerf the chances of mobs spawning with it on.

    Chainmail has always seemed like a sidegrade to Gold armor, and I agree it needs more distinction from its defensive brethren.

    How about this: instead of Gold's high enchantability and low durability, Chain could have low enchantability but high(ish) durability!
    Chainmail armor should have one point of Armor Toughness, adding up to 4 in a whole set. The actual defense can remain the same, but perhaps its durability can be increased by, say, 4% of what it is now as well. This makes it just a little more useful for basic defenses: awful enchants on it though!
    Its outright defensive prowess should leave it as something not to be ignored.

    Chainmail should also stay with Villager trading, as bogus as that sounds. Think of it like the trademark of Armorers! The price can certainly be raised somewhat from where it is now as well.

    How about instead of creating the max health mechanic that dosent make any sense, we create a new mechanic called Drag. The Drag Mechanic will Decrease Speed and Attack Speed based on the Armor Worn. This is the Drag Mechanic.

    Each Piece of Leather used in a piece of Armor will decrease the Player Speed and Atk Speed by 0.054%. Wearing Full Leather will decrease speed by 1.296%

    Each Diamond will decrease Speed by 0.198%, or 4.752% Drag for a full Set.

    Gold Ingots decrease Speed by 0.245%, or 5.880% for a ful set

    Iron Decreases Speed by 0.401%, or 9.624% Drag, almost a 10% Drag

    Netherite Decreases Speed by 0.405%, or an extra 1.62% added to the 4.752% Diamond Drag.

    Turtle Decreases Speed by 0.024%, or 0.12% Drag for a Helmet

    Chainmail Armor Should Decrease Speed by 2.211%, almost a fifth of Iron Drag, making it more desirable.                 

    Note: Maybe an Enchantment can be added to decrease drag "Feather Force" decreasing drag with 6% for level I, 11% for level II, and 18% for level III, giving a maximum 72% Drag decrease.

    Chainmail Armor could also have more durability because it would be less rigid

    I hope Mojang considers one of the ideas on this post because chainmail armor is common and useless now :(

    Add layered armor. for example you would be able to combine chain armor with netherite armor to make netherite chain armor.

    It should be crafted using the smithing table with the new 1.16 chains and the texture definitely needs a rework.

    Personally, I think they should stay the same in protection, but they should get a unique use like gold armor now has for getting neutral piglins in 1.16.

    Since much of what makes chainmail good in real life is its light weight, maybe:

    All armor should have a value for how much hunger it drains up when moving in them (does not have to be dramatically hunger-inducing to move in netherite) and chainmail alongside leather drains the least hunger.

    Riding a horse in chainmail or leather can allow the horse to go faster than when wearing other armor types.

    Players sink faster in water wearing iron and gold but leather and chainmail armor have better floatability so players don't sink as fast or just not sink at all after their head has been submerged.

    Chainmail has slightly-higher-than-iron-tier protection against melee attacks but only gold-tier protection against projectiles.

    Chainmail has higher enchantability than diamond, but not as enchanting as gold.
