Now that this is under review, I have some ideas regarding this-

rather than having seasons be mandatory across all worlds, perhaps add this as an additional world option. While I would absolutely love to have seasons in Minecraft, I know that a few people really don't- so by having it be optional, there's a nice happy medium!

It would be very immersive to have mob AI react differently during separate seasons- like Polar Bears hibernate during the Winter, or Villagers place pumpkins around their villages during Autumn. Perhaps Salmon spawn rates in river increase during the Summer.

Would love to see this idea implemented!

I think all of the overworld biomes should have these seasons. In deserts, it rains in winter maybe. Crops should not grow in winter in most biomes. Growing seasons maybe can vary on temperature and biome, like deserts only grow crops in winter and early spring, and in plains perhaps that is when no crops grow. Humid biomes like jungles might have only a dry and rainy season. Also, I imagine that seasons could affect mobs. For example, a mob might change skin during summer and winter (no animals currently in the game do this that I can think of. Maybe in some seasons, animals spawn in different places, like they spawn in hotter biomes in winter and colder biomes in summer. Also, what if some animals hibernated? Animals like frogs could hibernate. Just some suggestions to build onto this.

It could be togglable so that if people dont like it or it lags their game thye can just turn it off.

This is my idea of how seasons should work in the game.

Seasons should be different around the whole world so players can go to different places to experience different seasons however physical changes to the world like the colour of leaves and grass should only effect specific seasonal trees found in seasonal biomes. Seasons should change gradually every 4 moon cycles EG winter-4 moon cycles-spring-4 moon cycles...ect.

Then in all other biomes the seasons only effect: the weather like fog, rain, sun, snow cloudyness and sand storms. What ambient mobs are in the world during that season like birds, fish, bugs and other animals that hibernate. As well as the y-level that snow falls at in mountain biomes (in winter it would be lower).

It would be neat if there was an option to sync the seasons with real life time, especially for servers.

This is a huge implementation that would affect multiple systems across the game. This would likely have to be it's own update because of the changes it suggests. It is a great idea and has a wonderful appeal, but would be a pretty massive undertaking. I do think it should be part of Minecraft because it is a natural phenomena in the real world and that is what Minecraft tries to emulate on some aspects. I'm looking forward to see if they decide to use this idea and what they can offer in-game for it.

I love this feature and it would fit perfect in the 1.19 Update! That could be combined with a "season clock" or something like this.

So seasons are different depending on which latitude yer at, right. So make a geography update before this update.

For the concerns of having certain features of builds or important parts of the overworld being frozen over or affected in a negative way. How about we have this seasonal update be a part of a new difficulty, called “realism mode”. We already have the easy, medium, hard, hardcore, and adventure modes. Why not add one more name to the roster, to have the features of seasons and survival like gameplay with more realistic features like larger biomes, as well as adding certain passive animals like cows become neutral like wolves so they may attack if provoked. This way it adds new variety to the game and gives a new and fresh experience to players looking for a new challenge with changes to scenery and a harsher survival experience with the cold and affected crop growth. While not harming other players who want the game to stay as it is. The “seasonal update” can also be really beneficial to builders looking to spruce up their custom builds with a few new seasonal blocks, these blocks would obviously be available in the creative menu but also be only obtainable in the “realism difficulty” thus giving an incentive to try out the new feature. I think this way everyone can get the things they look for in Minecraft, and not have this change infringe on the enjoyment of other players who don’t want it. This way both parties benefit and Minecraft gains a brand new brilliant feature to go along with the “beautiful nature” changes Agnes mentioned, in Mojang’s plans for the Wild Update.

I love the idea, I have been wanting seasons to be added for years. And I also think that it should should be optional, something that you customize before creating a world, in case you have a world where you don't want or need seasons.

I do really like this idea, but each of the seasons should feel different, in terms of atmosphere and effects. If new blocks and foliage are the only things added, it could feel too much like another new biome.

They should update the sky adding planets and star constellations that would appear every so often indicating and triggering a season that is there or nearby, so a constellation being around for a certain amount of time could trigger the winter season to activate or let you know winter is coming and then when the Minecraft world time and days go by let’s say hypothetically 30 in game days go by then the season changes. This would give the telescope more uses, we could add enchantments and attachments like a tripod or a sight extender enchantment that helps you see all the constellations and planets.

Immersion is an important part of gameplay, they should implement seasonal changes to make the world more alive.

I think if this is added it should be a gamerule that by default is false because builds might not look as good if they're in the wrong season.

Would be awesome, though I have to ask if this kind of game can handle keeping track of seasons for such a large world.
