One could use the hedgehog spines to craft darts that could be fired with a blowgun

I was thinking that when you would step on a hedgehog it would do a heart or two of damage as well as them shedding their spines like a normal hedgehog does so that you can make traps that hurt mobs and players

It would be nice also if there is a chance to find a blue hedgehog like a brown panda if you get this reference then I’m proud.

Either in addition to or instead of hedgehogs there should be porcupines. They could be hidden in trees and deal you damage if you ruin their spot. Their quills are more suited to damage.

Maybe you could use the quills for an alternate arrow crafting recipe or something.

There could a "taming" system for them similar to foxes. Let's say adult hedgehogs are scared of the player and mobs and will stop moving, point their quills up, and hiss at the player. But, if one were to give a baby hedgehog something like spider eyes, you could tame it(Since hedgehogs eat bugs in the wild I figured spider eyes would be the closest thing to reality), or, the player would have to spend a certain amount of time around a baby hedgehog as to gain its trust, similarly how one would have to be chosen by a hedgehog if someone was adopting one. The hedgehog wouldn't follow you but it wouldn't be afraid of you.

They would make nice, and cute pets, like in real life.

and shed spines to craft darts, and traps as others have said in the comments

If this gets added, how bout an Easter egg? If you name a sheep jeb_, it becomes a rainbow sheep. If you name a rabbit Toast, you get a hidden skin. With the hedgehog, if you name it Sonic, it turns blue and moves at twice the speed as normal

I have a pet hedgehog, so i know that young hedgehogs change spikes, so i would like this feature for hedgehogs to be like turtles= babies grow up and drop their old shell Hedgehogs would grow up and drop some spikes
They would take naps during day and be active at night searching for food almost like foxes
If u wanted to tame a hedgehog you must wait holding worm/insect till the hedgehog unrolls from scared hedgehog position and go to you similar to ocelots
For hedgehog food i would add worms/insects mobs to dirt, and they hesgehogs would hunt them and eat them with animation of them digging into the dirt
Also, if some mobs touch hedgehog it will scare them away and the spikes will do 1 heart demage
I would like reference to sonic that if you name your hedgehog sonic it will be much faster

I had my own ideas for hedgehogs too, a lot of their irl behaviors would be nice to see in the game! They would be passive, but deal damage when hit thanks to the quills, and have an "upset" stage when around monsters or predators, making them deal damage to anything that touches or walks by it, cats would avoid hedgehogs too. Instead of dropping anything on death, they should shed their quills when they grow up, like turtles do with their scutes.

Okay but why hedgehogs? This question seriously needs to be asked. Because honestly you would be better off adding squirrels or songbirds or something simpler to do the same job.

They could work as pest control

maybe you could also tame them and if you name it sonic it turns blue

Some were wondering what the use of a hedgehog would be considering they don't do much in real life except make great pets, so I had an idea. Since termites are being added into the game in a future update, I was thinking if you had a pet hedgehog, or just a wild hedgehog, it would eat the termites and keep them under control so they won't destroy your house, or buildings. I would love to see this addition in Minecraft considering I have a pet hedgehog, and them having a use in the game would be really neat.

Hedgehogs would be a good feature because it would be slow and if you walk or run on it as well as jumping it will do around 1 heart of damage and should be tamable with ants or termites (Savannah biome)

There could be a rare chance ,like brown pandas and stuff, for the hedgehog to spawn blue and go really fast as a reference to sonic for a bit of fun.

I think hedgehogs would be a great addition to the game, in addition to everyone else's ideas like using their spines for potential blow dart ammo, it could also act like a pest in farms like they do in real life, since they aren't picky eaters they could potentially pick your berry bushes, not only that they are natural prey to foxes. Also a great feature would be nest building

I love Hedgehogs they’re so cute and should be added to Minecraft. They could sleep in a ball during the daytime and also roll up into a ball when under threat. They could also eat Melon Blocks, Grass and Berries!

Maybe they could drop spikes to make spike traps to protect you base from mobs

There so many things you can make with the quills from the hedgehog like a chest plate that has a built in enchantment like how the turtle helmet is but give it thorns you can make a new weapon like a blow dart or a spiked stick

It would be nice if you could tame the hadgehog with some insect and it was going with you like dogs, cats and parrots, and if they would see a monster they would do the hedgehog thing ( sorry idk how to say that in English) to protect themselves and player from getting hurt

Needles of hedgehogs can replace arrows or make a dart, which, when hit by any ESSENCE, will make it impossible to walk.

Could be an equivalent like the pufferfish, a mob you should not get too close or hit the mob as it will use its needles like Thorns. Maybe somehow by giving the hedgehog food, it can drop some of its needles and lets say if you have 6 of them you can then make Thorns as an armor upgrade rather than an enchantment.

For example the new Netherite armor has some bonus knockback points without any enchantment on. So how about you can have this bonus armor feature of Thorns on the armor of your choosing without it being as an enchantment on it (or double it to get a Thorns level 3 or 4 which only is possible this way)

Another idea: you can nametag them for it no not despawn and let them roam around your base. That why it acts as a pasive moving cherrybush that damages mobs if they walk into it, but they wont attack the hedgehog as theu are passive.

Just some random ideas to make more of it than just a new mob but boy I would love to have hedgehogs around my base just like IRL sometimes seeing them in my garden :)

I agree i think hedgehogs could ne useful in many different ways one reason is
If you tame them they could attack other mobs for you what they would do is when a hostile mob comes close they will shoot out there spikes out at them dealing about 4 hearts.
    2. They can hunt for you if you stand them up you could give them a item and they will go hunting for that item so if you gave them diamonds they would dig until they have found one but if you want them to stop looking you would have to sit them and after you sit them they would drop the item that you gave them and it would take longer if it was a rare item than a easy item like dirt.

There should be a blue variant as a sonic reference.
