Shulker boxes can be placed down, but backpacks could be an inventory only item, in which case it still takes up a slot in your inventory. I guess it would be kind of redundant in some ways, but I'd like to see some sort of ability to pack on the go. Maybe updating the shulker boxes to where you can access them quickly. Shulker backpacks? I think one way to look at it is that adding backpacks for early game would probably undermine shulker boxes, but if you could combine them together to make, or upgrade, the backpack to have a lot more space, then I think it wouldn't undermine the shulker box anymore. It'd still have a good use.

Well, if there are back packs, we can wear them as a chest plate but won't provide protection, will not break but can also put shulker boxes in them. Good idea?

This would be a great mid game item before you get shulker boxes. It would take up the hefts plate slot like the elytra. People would use it often when mining or strip mining to gain more storage space out of it. It would be an option when opening your inventory to click on similar to the back packs on donkeys. They would store items when they are not equipped and when dropped would drop some of the items in them but as a chances to save a few (unless the backpack falls in lava).

The issue with shulker boxes is that you have to be at the end, equipped with all the best items in the game. Backpacks would be a nice addition for players that aren't at the stage of fighting the ender dragon.

Any sort of backpack would be great. We already have shulker boxes, but by the time you get them, you''ve probably almost done everything. Perhaps if it were a smaller inventory space than a chest and if it couldn't be put into chests or ender chests

Like skulker boxes that can go in the chest plate spot, cool

I agree with what he proposes and those who will put to replace the shulker box do not see it as a replacement if not as a form of early space or when you go to mine you can fill the inventory of stone, granite, gravel and backpack It would be very useful for those types of cases

I am crossing my fingers that Backpacks are going to be added! More storage!

Instead of being smilier to shulkerbox, maybe the backpack would be an item that takes the chestplate slot, and gives you 9 more inventory slots?
That way, you have to sacrifice armor/elytra - what makes shulkerboxes still useful and make the backpack look more adventure style (and it's a BACKpack)

I think backpacks would be a great addition to minecraft java and bedrock. It could allow early game additional space, it could maybe add just 9-18 additional storage space. It could also be crafted from 6 wool (top row and bottom row) a chest (centre) and two leather (one to the left and right of the centre). This would be a great way to transport extra blocks and tools around and would also help transporting building materials for big builds that require lots of different blocks. It would be really helpful for those in early game situations when they're not prepared for the end side of the game.So overall i will really strongly support this idea and hope the developers notice this and add this item to the game in a later update.

LISTEN. Shulker boxes will still have a use. they are portable storage, yes? and they are late game, yes? we need a easier way to transport things, while not being uncreative or rendering something also useless. So, they would offer 9-18 slots of storage, so a smaller amount of storage, AND are early game! they could be worn as a chestplate. you could have several, but can only use one since you have to wear it to have access to it. its not OP. its not difficult to get. its simply a early game portable storage. so, stop saying it replaces or renders shulker boxes useless. it is a simpler, more affordable, BUT LIMITED, portable storage.

I think backpack, if added, should:

-only give few slots (like 9),and not 27

-be only accesible when worn on chestplate/elytra slot

    This would make them

-useful, because they wouldn't require the player to stop

-early-game, because late game players with shulker boxes would choose elytra instead

-not too overpowered, because wearing them would sacrifice some armor and they would only allow for slightly higher number of items carried

Also pouches, sword sheaths and quivers, like to carry the sword you need a sheath, you could make the game harder this way.

I for one wanted "Backpack" and "pockets" to be ENCHANTMENTS for Chestplate and Leggings respectively.

    • Backpack
      Possible Levels: I, II, III
Level I: 3 extra inventory spaces in a separate grid to the right of the main inventory.
Level II: 6 extra inventory spaces in a separate grid to the right of the main inventory.
Level III: 9 extra inventory spaces in a separate grid to the right of the main inventory.
The completed grid would be a 3x3 square, each level adding 1 column.
    • Pockets:
      Possible Levels: I, II
Level I: 2 extra inventory spaces in a separate grid to the right of the hotbar
Level II: 4 extra inventory spaces in a separate grid to the right of the hotbar
The completed grid would be 2x2 square, each level adding 1 column

If you had items in your backpack/pockets storage spaces and you take the armor off/the armor breaks, I would presume that the items drop.

This addition would be great since new updates are bringing us more items and we need a new way to organize or inventory. Also a cool addition to add a purpose to all the items we carry and a new stylish look at our skins! Amazing suggestion and it's about time. :)

Lack of more inventory slots has bugged me for years. They keep adding new items but no better way to manage them.

Shulker boxes and ender chests are clunky alternatives that you constantly have to put in and out of your inventory to access. Donkeys and llamas are slow and bulky.

I imagine backpacks as a quality of life improvement for advanced players so they don't have to waste time managing inventory. For me it's about having to click a few less menial buttons hundreds of time in a play session to access your items.

Backpacks should of course be harder to get than shulker boxes since they would be an upgrade to them. Each should have at least 27 slots and there should be a limit to how many you can have at once. Perhaps a special chest enchant would allow attaching a shulker box to a chestpiece so you can access it alongside your inventory.

Backpacks would be a great idea. It would be an ideal tool to help you when you are traveling. With a backpack, you can bring all your stuff with you.

The backpack would either take up the torso slot for armor, or have an entirely new slot next to the torso slot for items to wear over your armor.

It could be crafted with 8 leather.

It would allow you to have an extra 9 slots of inventory space and could possibly be upgraded later on to a different tier (3 tiers in total) to add 9 more slots each time.

-It would not defeat the purpose of a shulker, or replace a shulker by any means because this would be an early game tool. Also, shulkers are only obtainable after you defeat the ender dragon so this would be a good tool for newer players who are traveling long distances.

My ideas on how backpacks could be implemented:

    1. Could be crafted with Ravager Hides. This would give the ravagers a desirable loot as well as making the backpack more of a rarity, due to the spawn rate of Pillager patrols and the high level of Ravager combat difficulty
    2. Would occupy the Chestplate slot.
    3. Could have an upgrade system similar to that of maps (i.e. Level 0/4) in place of paper, you would use Ravager Hides.
    4. Dyable
    5. Can hold shulker boxes

Here's how I think it could be crafted: (black ink in place of Ravager Hides)

While this recipe would allow players to craft multiple backpacks using fewer Ravager Hides than would be necessary for upgrading the backpack to higher levels, I feel this system is still balanced. If players want to wear multiple backpack inventories at one time, then they can spend the extra 3 Ravager hides to do so. Giving the player the option of multiple low-level backpacks or fewer higher level backpacks.

I've made a mockup of what I think the gui could be below.

Here, the backpack is depicted at Level 3/4, having 4 tabs and 84 extra slots (The maxed backpack would have 5 tabs and 105 slots)

Players could also give each tab an item to label each section of the backpack (potentially at the bottom of the gui)

This mockup was the first step towards making a mod, but I would rather have the MOJANG team make it. I did my best to keep the design balanced as well as keeping in mind how it would fit Minecraft's gameplay.

Shulker boxes already serve this purpose, and are late game for a reason. Inventory management is part of the challenge of the game.

This is a good idea and the existance of shulker boxes doesn't make up for this.they are end game items and are really hard to obtain. So for backpacks to work.
They work as a expansion to your inventory.
They take up an armour slot or maybe a new slot only for backpacks?
They can't be crafted and are found in dungeon chests, so you have to explore.
You can't put them on ground and store items.you have to have it in your inventory.
As soon as you take them off, all items drop.
They have a limit of 18 slots
This would be a really great addition to the early game as we all know, picking up all your items from first days is the worst experience ever. And to most people in this thread, no they won't replace shulker boxes and won't feel like modded Minecraft, they will simply work as an expansion to your inventory that can't store item while being placed on the ground. The concept of an ore more powerful than diamond was deemed pretty modded but here we are, we have to at least give this idea a chance. How do we know it feels like modded when we know that many modded features(or modded resembling features) that made into Minecraft were a great addition.

I keep seeing mention of shulker boxes but I am nowhere near that level for one of those.  A backpack would be so wonderful to have when adventuring - I feel like weapons, food and some basic supplies alone takes up half of your inventory and I love the donkeys with a chest on their back but sometimes in caves it is just not practical!

Shulker Chests already have a functionality similar to a backpack, except you have to place it to access its inventory.

If Minecraft were to add backpacks, they could be accessed by right clicking while holding it, but only limited at nine slots of storage. It would be a good early game solution for expanding inventory but shulker chests may still be a better investment in the endgame.

In addition to backpacks, a type of cargo cart to carry chests would be VERY useful !!

We have shulker boxes. An easier way to implement it would be letting you put it in your chestplate slot.

I don't know... Why? But I think it would be pretty cool if your inventory is full and you can take a backpack. Idk but I think it would be ok

You could make it with a shulker box and maybe some string and leather

I love the idea of having a portable expandable inventory you can carry with you without having to place it down before getting the stuff you need out.

I agree cause even though we have shulker boxes those are hard to get. So like we can make backpacks out of leather

I think having backpacks would be a great thing to be implemented, because in the early stages of your minecraft gameplay, while mining, exploring, your inventory gets filled up really quick and we need a way to be able to store more items with us,thus not having to wait to get to the End and make shulcker boxes. Also I think that backpack should be easily craftable just a few piece of items dropped by mobs and entitys, such as string and leather to make a leather backpack. Also being able to make even bigger backpacks by combining two leather backpacks(or any kind of backpack),and get a bigger one with more slots to store your items in.
