My thoughts are that they should be in the game, but have less inventory space than a shulker box so it doesn't replace it. entirely.

A backpack should be added so when you inventory is full you can fill it up and put it on you chest plate spot

It could be have the same space than the barrels or maybe three spaces less. Cause i suppose that they don't put it because they think that the player have already a lot of space (which obviously is not true, but maybe they want to be a little realistic with this thing, i suppose).

Backpacks sound like a good way for early-game inventory expansion since shulker boxes are an end-game item. Of course, it must be balanced so it does not replace shulker boxes.
Backpacks (or satchels, pouches, block bags, etc.) should be a temporary solution for more space until the player can obtain shulker boxes.
It could work like CuteScroll45388 and SpecialisToL mentioned: it will expand the inventory by 9 slots and when unequipped items will go back into the inventory (or drop when inventory is full).
If the player’s body slot is used for the item, I think that would be a fine trade off between armor and inventory. If the inventory UI gets updated and adds extra equipment slots like in CuteScroll45388‘s picture, the new slot shouldn’t be exclusive for backpacks but be a slot for things like an Elytra OR a backpack. That way a player will decide whether they want to fly or have extra inventory space. The extra slot could also be used for future additions if necessary.
For crafting using a 3x3 grid, I thought that it would be a string on the top right and left corners, leather on the middle left, middle right, and bottom middle (a “v” shape), and a chest in the center. A possible addition to the crafting recipe is to add an iron bar or tripwire hook to the top middle to act as the “sealing” nature of the backpack and to add iron as a requirement of obtaining the item.

If you’re without a house, it’s very difficult to carry all the necessary items to kill the ender dragon. An option to have an extra row in the inventory would really help, not just with having the items you need, but also for builders who need to have many stacks of blocks, a scaffolding block, and all their tools and weapons.

i feel like backpacks would be a cool way of making it so that the player could have an extra line or two of inventory space by having the back pack either as a separate item or an enchantment sort of thing which can be applied to chest armour

I think backpacks add another layer to the game (for me, at least) as I feel more like an adventurer. So many new items have been added (and will) to the game as well...

Something that would be cool, but probably wouldn't happen:

-Decrease of starting inventory making getting leather and making yourself a backpack an important step.

Something that is less cool, but more likely to happen:

-A small leather backpack that increases your inventory space by another row.

While we do have shulker boxes, it would be nice to have a method to move lots of things earlier in the game, maybe just make it less "slots" so the shulker box still has a use. I know people who hate the end and will never go there, but they still want a way to move many items conveniently.

We need bagpacks because shulker box could be only obtained in the end of the game.

There should be slot for bagpack in inventory (like armour or shield slot). When bagpack equipped you have additional row for items in your inventory.

There must be different kinds of bagpacks adding different amount of additional slots.

Have the backpack be very limited. Have it be 9 slots (i'd recommend less) and sacrifice the chest slot. It would be there for early game, but you would have to remove it for elytra or armor. even steven.

Here's how backpacks would be different from shulker boxes.
    Early Game Item
Worn insted of Chestplate w/ sole purpose of traveling/exploring
You can either put it on leave it on the ground like a block. Not possible to stack in the inventory. Can only have one on.
Considering options above backpacks could be really useful.

Maybe there could be different kinds of back packs with different uses. For example a crafting table book bag which just lets you use a 3x3 table in your inventory. Or one where you can 5 extra slots but only for food. Or 3 extra slots but only tools

Backpacks are an easy way for extra storage in your inventory. If you want extra space you'll have to get a donkey, find a saddle ,and makea chest. Then if you want a lot of space you'd have to get a shulker box and they are reallly hard to get.

although we have shulker boxes, backpacks would be more easy to obtain considers you have to kill shulker to make a shulker box.  That requires going to the end, beating the dragon and entering the end city.  Backpacks could be made of a whole new material paired with dye to add more variety and possibly in the future special designs, backpacks are a great idea and I for one hope they get added! :)

I like this idea, but there would have to be a trade-off, where makes you a little slower or something

Backpacks could be an early game item crafted with leather and string, unlike shulker boxes, you would equip the backpack in the chestplate slot and it would directly give you more invetory space, it could be upgraded with iron, gold and diamond, increasing futher more your inventory slots

I feel like you should have a backpack by default and everything in the inventory should be in it. However, you should be able to upgrade your backpack and add enchantments that allow for items to be sorted automatically, or for you to keep some of your items after death/have the backpack be converted to a chest with all your stuff so they don't despawn.

The backpack should have the abilities store as many items as your inventory without the hot bar and should be equipped like a chest plate and our can access it by holding it in your hand or it doubles your inventory space.

In my opinion, this would make mining so much better because it would have more space.😊🤣

Crafted from 8 leather and a chest, could slow you down or take up the chest armour slot. Allows you to have more inventory and can be placed in the ground as a chest

While Shulker boxes add extra inventory, they are very late game and do not make the player look like any more of an adventurer.  Backpacks and campfires make the game feel like more of an adventure, campfires were added and look perfect, now we need backpacks.  Crafted with leather and string, the backpack is made to extend the players inventory while traveling.  Backpacks can take up a chestplate spot, or there could be a new option to have it on with chestplates.  Backpacks will make you feel like more of an adventurer while exploring the vast world of minecraft.  In my opinion, backpacks are a necessary addition to the wonderful game of minecraft.
