Redstone dot expanded (right click swipe)

Actually, why can you make redstone dust into a dot, but not swipe it to the right/left or only to the one side?
If I don't want two lines of redstone to intersect, why can't I just right to separate them?
This is actually both super convenient, and makes sense.

Depending on where on the block you right click you shove the dust there / away from there. Like how to orientate directions when placing stairs, pistons and glazed terracotta.
