Copper isn't really useful, the only things that can be made with copper are copper blocks, spyglasses and lightining rods, which aren't really useful or used at all. By using copper instead of diamonds to dupe the trims would give them an actual use, and people (besides some builders) would actually stop ignoring copper.
Another problem with using diamonds to dupe trims is the fact that to get a full netherite armor and tools set, which before only needed 35 diamonds, now needs 98 diamonds. That, and the fact that the time spent searching for the upgrading trim and getting all the ancient debris necessary to upgrade the full gear, make netherite gear not worth it only for a little bit more durability and efficiency. And the other trims that only change the armor cosmetically are also not worth it.
By making this change, armor trims would be more accessible and used by every player, and literally no one would complain about this change.
