Experience Point acquisition is either too steep (causing way to long to earn higher amounts of XP) or things ranging from armor repair to enchanting cost way too much.
Making Minecraft (Survival Mode) a lesson in setting aside blocks of time to say (1) Fish for days on end (2) Smelt with a wall of blast furnaces, ore that goes into chests never to be used and the old stand by (3) XP farm a Mob Spawner.
All of those options seem to be cheese moves than ways to gain XP that is needed through regular game play.
This imbalance can easily be solved with a less steep XP scale.
