Why should one buy both versions of Minecraft only to play the other one?

I think it's a little dumb to have to buy both Java and Bedrock only to play Java. Before it was possible to only purchase the other one, so what happened?

    Because they wanted to combine them also It's still the same price for java edition as it was years ago just now you also get bedrock now if you said you were only going to play bedrock then yeah I might have sympathy for you but I think you need to do a little more research before making a post.

    its the same price, but now you get two, so people dont get mad when they buy bedrock and want to play java, for example a person i know got minecraft windows edition (bedrock) from their father, because of that they couldnt play java with us

    because when we are done with java, we can switch to bedrock (or opposite).
