Plants in Minecraft are fine how they are, but I think they could be better.
Plants should be a little different to start. Plants in Minecraft are ok right now, but they could be even better. Generation is one thing. I think that the way plants currently generate is nice, but could use some more detail so it matches up with more recent designs. For example, patches of moss carpet would look nice on the floor of most temperate and warm biomes (instead of just growing on mangrove trees). Dead bushes would also look nice under trees to give the feeling that plants are competing over resources like sunlight and water.
I think that plants could function without the player killing them. I know this could lead to overgrown biomes that spread into unwanted areas, but I have a solution. Each tree could have a timer set (if generated, not when placed by players) for multiple days. When it ends, the tree could have a chance to decay and 1-3 saplings will be placed nearby. They would continue the cycle until the end of the biome they are spreading in (if that is possible). The same would go with other plants, like sweet berries. Even mushrooms could have a way of spreading.
