I suggest adding a new camera item. When used in Survival Mode, the player can take screenshots, not even in first-person, but from the side (but they can't fly through blocks), as well as an isometric perspective option.
When taking a screenshot, you can choose the photo resolution: 1x1, 2x1, or 1x2 (so they can later be placed in frames, which will display as framed maps).
Afterwards, all screenshots can be added to a photo, which, when held in your hand, will display as a map (or as a book, as I suggested).
Photos can be shared with friends or pasted into a writable book, where you can write something below or above them. This will allow you to create albums in which you can record coordinates and terrain, or how the world has changed over time, or keep a personal diary. Or creating a construction guide book with stages (There are tons of ideas for how to use this)
You can also glue maps to the writable book, which would automatically be drawn and changed if they weren't laminated.
Also, since these are screenshots, they can be found and saved from the game folder.
